A delegation from the councils of US cities in Tampa and St. Petersburg Monday in Havana expressed interest in continuing and advancing in exchange programs despite the bilateral tensions that have arisen in recent months between the governments of Cuba and the US, reported EFE.
The group, made up of representatives from the economic, academic, cultural, health, scientific and media sectors, met with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Trade of Cuba and other agencies and state entities of the island.
Tampa City Council President Ivonne Yolie Capin, who traveled to the front of the American delegation, said that with this visit they are betting on future relations between Tampa and Havana, and to “share common points” have both sides.
This is the first delegation of a state of the neighboring country that visits the island in the middle of the diplomatic crisis between Washington and Havana unleashed by alleged “acoustic attacks” that have affected 22 officials of the US Embassy. After talks with representatives of Cuban Ministries of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), Transportation, and the company BioCubafarma, producer of medicines and biotech vaccines, among other institutions, the American delegation will be received this Tuesday at the headquarters of MINREX.
The group visited the Special Development Zone of Mariel port, the project conceived by the Cuban Government with the objective of attracting foreign investment.

Una delegación de los consejos de las ciudades estadounidenses de Tampa y San Petersburgo manifestó el lunes en La Habana su interés por continuar y avanzar en los programas de intercambio a pesar de las tensiones bilaterales surgidas en los últimos meses entre los gobiernos de Cuba y EEUU, reportó EFE.
El grupo, integrado por representantes de los sectores económico, académico, cultural, de la salud, científico, medios de comunicación, se reunió con representantes del Ministerio de Comercio Exterior de Cuba y de otros organismos y entidades estatales de la Isla.
La presidenta del Consejo de la ciudad de Tampa, Ivonne Yolie Capin, quien viajó al frente de la comitiva norteamericana, dijo que con esta visita apuestan por las relaciones en el futuro entre Tampa y La Habana, y para “compartir los puntos comunes” que tienen ambas partes.
Esta es la primera delegación de un estado del país vecino que visita la Isla en medio de la crisis diplomática entre Washington y La Habana desatada por supuestos “ataques acústicos” que han afectado a 22 funcionarios de la embajada estadounidense. Incidentes que aún se investigan y con los que el Gobierno cubano niega estar relacionado, la administración del presidente norteamericano Donald Trump respondió con el retiro del 60% de sus diplomáticos de la Isla y la expulsión de 15 representantes de la legación cubana en Washington.
En la apertura este lunes de la reunión con la delegación estadounidense, la directora de América del Norte del Ministerio de Comercio Exterior de la Isla, María de la Luz B’Hamel, afirmó que su Gobierno sigue abierto “a los encuentros de este tipo para poder identificar nuevas posibilidades de avanzar en las relaciones a pesar de todos los obstáculos existentes”.
La directiva instó a la comitiva de Tampa a “aprovechar al máximo” el encuentro con el fin de “identificar las posibilidades de intercambios, de negocios y de cooperación que puedan existir” y expresó su convencimiento de que “hay infinidad de oportunidades que serían en beneficio de ambos países”.
Tras conversar con representantes de los ministerios cubanos de Ciencia, Tecnología y Medio Ambiente (CITMA), del Transporte, y de la empresa BioCubafarma, productora de medicamentos y vacunas biotecnológicas, entre otras instituciones, la comitiva estadounidense será recibida este martes en la sede del MINREX.
El grupo visitó la Zona Especial de Desarrollo del puerto Mariel, el proyecto concebido por el Gobierno cubano con el objetivo de atraer las inversiones extranjeras.
