Icon of neoclassical architecture in the city of Matanzas, the ‘Teatro Sauto’ is 154 years old, opened on April 6, 1863 its doors for the first time, and in this long time did attract famous artists such as the French actress Sarah Bernhardt (Camille in 1887 ), Russian dancer Anna Pavlova in 1945, Cuban composer José White Lafitte, Italian opera singer Enrico Caruso and Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia among others. The Theater has become a symbol of the city, so much so that the great Mexican muralist Diego Rivera once said: “I recognize Matanzas by the Sauto”.
The Teatro Sauto since 1863 has been a proud symbol of the city. The 775-seat U-shaped theater is almost completely covered with wood panels. It has three balconies, and its floor can be raised to turn the auditorium into a ballroom. The original curtain of the theater is a painting of the Bridge of Concord on the river Yumurí. The lobby is graced by the carrara marble statues of Greek goddesses and the main ceiling of the hallway carries the paintings of the muses.
Located in the founding Plaza de la Vigia, in the historic center of the city and more than 100 kilometers east of Havana, the theater owes its design to the architect of Italian origin Daniel Dall ‘Aglio, who conceived it with acoustics similar to the one of the celebrated Scala of Milan. The installation was born under the name of Esteban, in tribute to the then governor Pedro Esteban and Arranz and was later renamed Teatro Sauto, due to his benefactor, Ambrosio de la Concepción Sauto and Noda (1803-1880), who committed his fortune to erect it, and it is known that he was accustomed to personally welcome the public on performance nights, along with his wife, Juana Jenckes.
Among other singularities of the “Sauto”, it stands out that it has the original machinery to elevate its stage level, unique of its type conserved in Cuba and manufactured by an English company by the architect Dall ‘Aglio himself, only equaled by two theaters in the world, La Scala in Milan and the Colón in Buenos Aires.
More than a century and a half after the Italian architect and painter Daniel Dall’Aglio portrayed the beautiful muses of Greek mythology, the ceiling of the Teatro Sauto is geometric, totally symmetrical, perfect: everything that exists on one side, is repeated in the other. That is why everyone thinks that Dall’Aglio, who in addition to the projects of the coliseum, made all his decoration, also had in the vault that benevolent sense of space.

Ícono de la arquitectura neoclásica en la ciudad de Matanzas, el Teatro Sauto cumplió 154 años, el seis de abril de 1863 abrió por primera vez sus puertas, y en sus mejores tiempos atrajo artistas famosos como la actriz francesa Sarah Bernhardt (en Camille en 1887), la bailarina rusa Anna Pavlova en 1945, el compositor cubano José White Lafitte, el cantante de ópera italiana Enrico Caruso y el guitarrista español Andrés Segovia entre otros. El Teatro se ha convertido en un símbolo de la ciudad, tanto que el gran muralista mexicano Diego Rivera dijo una vez: “Reconozco Matanzas por el Sauto”.
El Teatro Sauto desde 1863 ha sido un símbolo orgulloso de la ciudad. El teatro en forma de U con 775 asientos está casi completamente cubierto con paneles de madera. Tiene tres balcones, y su piso se puede levantar para convertir el auditorio en un salón de baile. La cortina original del teatro es una pintura del Puente de la Concordia sobre el río Yumurí. El vestíbulo es agraciado por las estatuas de mármol de Carrara de las diosas griegas y el techo principal del pasillo lleva las pinturas de las musas.
Situado en la fundacional Plaza de La Vigía, en pleno centro histórico de la urbe y a más de 100 kilómetros al este de La Habana, el teatro debe su diseño al arquitecto de origen italiano Daniel Dall’ Aglio, quien lo concibió con una acústica similar a la de la célebre Scala de Milán. La instalación nació bajo el nombre de Esteban, en homenaje entonces al entonces gobernador Pedro Esteban y Arranz y fue rebautizada despues hasta denominarse Teatro Sauto, debido a su benefactor, Ambrosio de la Concepción Sauto y Noda (1803-1880), quien comprometió su fortuna para erigirlo, y se sabe que acostumbraba a dar la bienvenida personalmente al público en las noches de función, junto a su esposa, Juana Jenckes.
Entre otras singularidades del “Sauto”, destaca que cuenta con la maquinaria original para elevar su platea a nivel del escenario, única de su tipo conservada en Cuba y fabricada por una compañía inglesa por encargo del propio arquitecto Dall’ Aglio, únicamente igualado por dos teatros en mundo, La Scala de Milán y el Colón de Buenos Aires..
Más de un siglo y medio después que el arquitecto y pintor italiano Daniel Dall´Aglio plasmara las hermosas musas de la mitología griega, el techo del Teatro Sauto es geométrico, totalmente simétrico, perfecto: todo lo que existe a un lado, se repite en el otro. Por eso todos piensan que Dall´Aglio, quien además de los proyectos del coliseo, realizó toda su decoración, tuvo también en la bóveda ese benevolente sentido del espacio.
