Fulgencio Batista was born in the town of Veguita, located in the municipality of Banes, Cuba, province of Holguín, in 1901, to Belisario Batista Palermo and Carmela Zaldívar González, who had fought in the Cuban War of Independence. He was of Spanish, African and Chinese descent.
Batista was initially educated at a public school in Banes, and later attended night classes at an American Quaker school. He left home at age 14, after his mother’s death. Coming from a humble background, he made his living as a laborer in the cane fields, docks, and railways. He was a tailor, a mechanic, a seller of coal, and a seller of fruits. In 1921, he traveled to Havana and joined the army as a private in April of that year.
He was in power in Cuba as president-elected from 10 October 1940 until 10 October 1944 and then from 10 March 1952 in a coup until 1 January 1959 when he was overthrown by Fidel Castro.
Personal Life.
Batista married Elisa Godínez and Gómez (1900-1993) on July 10, 1926. They had three children: Mirta Caridad (1927-2010), Elisa Aleida (born in 1933) and Fulgencio Rubén Batista Godínez (1933-2007). They divorced in October 1945.
He later married Marta Fernández Miranda (1923-2006) on November 28, 1945 and had five children: Jorge Luis (born 1942), Roberto Francisco (born 1947), Carlos Manuel (1950-1969), Fulgencio José, Marta María Batista Fernández (born 1957) Carlos died very young. He also had an illegitimate daughter, Fermina Lázara Batista Estévez (born in 1935).
According to one of our writers (Rita Ruiz) she remembers three children of dictator Batista: Mirta, Fulgencio Rubén and Elisa Aleyda. The first three are the fruit of the marriage of the president with Elisa Godinez. Mirta and Fulgencio Ruben, dubbed Papo, passed away years ago. Elisa Aleyda still lives and as far as I know she is employed at Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami. He was born on February 7, 1941 and was the first child to see the light in the Havana Presidential Palace.
Five children were procreated in a second marriage of Batista; this time with Marta Fernández Miranda. These are: Jorge Luis, Francisco, Roberto, José Fulgencio, Marta Maria and Carlos. The first of them, Jorge, was born in the Kuquine estate, when the man was still married to Elisa. The youngest, Marta Maria, was born in 1953. Of these five boys there is one deceased, Carlos Manuel, who died of leukemia in 1969, at the age of 19. He is buried in Madrid in the same vault where in 1973 the dictator would be buried and in 2008 his widow was buried.
To Fermina, Batista called her Carmelita, Carmelina or Carmela, that was the name of its mother. She was born on July 7, 1935 and is the daughter of Marina Estévez, with whom she never married, although she recognized the child and did not forget her in her will.
At the suggestion of his father, Fermina left Cuba days before the flight of his father who asked him, through Colonel Hernandez Volta, his lifelong helper, to move to New York. She later settled in Coral Ridge and in 1975 moved to Fort Lauderdale. She married but her marriage lasted less than a year. In 1989, she adopted Ana. In 2015 she was evicted from her home due to payment problems.
The Nuevo Herald, in its edition of June 22, gave the story of Fermina Batista. A front-page photo showed her sitting on the ground, under a tree and surrounded by other indigents. He told the press he was thinking of recovering because Ana, fat and ungracious, had gotten a job in Orlando. In fact, she disappeared from the park and the media, perhaps rescued by the family.

Estuvo en el poder en Cuba como presidente electo desde el 10 October 1940 hasta el 10 October 1944 y despues desde el 10 de marzo de 1952 en un golpe de Estado hasta el 1 de enero de 1959 cuando fue derrocado por Fidel Castro.
Vida Personal.
Batista se casó con Elisa Godínez y Gómez (1900-1993) el 10 de julio de 1926. Tuvieron tres hijos: Mirta Caridad (1927-2010), Elisa Aleida (nacida en 1933) y Fulgencio Rubén Batista Godínez (1933-2007). Se divorciaron en octubre de 1945.
Más tarde se casó con Marta Fernández Miranda (1923-2006) el 28 de noviembre de 1945 y tuvo cinco hijos: Jorge Luis (nacido en 1942), Roberto Francisco (nacido en 1947), Carlos Manuel (1950-1969), Fulgencio José, Marta María Batista Fernández (nacida en 1957). Carlos murió muy joven. También tuvo una hija ilegítima, Fermina Lázara Batista Estévez (nacida en 1935).
Segun una de nuestras escritoras (Rita Ruiz) que ella recuerda a tres hijos del dictador Batista: Mirta, Fulgencio Rubén y Elisa Aleyda. Los tres primeros son fruto del matrimonio del mandatario con Elisa Godínez. Mirta y Fulgencio Rubén, apodado Papo fallecieron hace años. Elisa Aleyda aún vive y hasta donde conozco es empleada del Hospital Monte Sinaí, de Miami. Nació el 7 de febrero de 1941 y fue el primer niño que vio la luz en el Palacio Presidencial habanero.
Cinco hijos se procrearon en un segundo matrimonio de Batista; esta vez con Marta Fernández Miranda. Estos son: Jorge Luis,Francisco, Roberto, José Fulgencio, Marta Maria y Carlos. El primero de ellos, Jorge, nació en la finca Kuquine, cuando el hombre estaba todavía casado con Elisa. La más pequeña, Marta María, nació en 1953. Se instaló después en Coral Ridge y en 1975 se mudó a Fort Lauderdale. Hubo de casarse pero su matrimonio duró menos de un año. En 1989 adoptó a Ana. En 2015 la desalojaron de su casa por problemas con los pagos.
El Nuevo Herald, en su edición del 22 de junio pasado, daba a conocer la historia de Fermina Batista. Una foto de primera plana la mostraba sentada en el suelo, bajo un árbol y rodeada de otros indigentes. Dijo a la prensa que pensaba recuperarse pues Ana, gorda y poco agraciada, había conseguido empleo en Orlando. De hecho, desapareció del parque y de los medios, quizás rescatada por la familia.
