“Ave María Pelencho, I feel good, with Hatuey my compay, Hatuey very cold”, or “Jacaranda! The little piece of Sunday that you deserve”.
These phrases were the main advertising campaigns of the Hatuey beer, especially on the television news, in which Manolo Ortega drank a beer in one gulp.
Nobody can say for sure who was Pelencho, it is not known if it is true that someone with that name existed somewhere in our country. What it does know is that it was a character invented by a bus driver on a bus route that, crowded with passengers, traveled daily through the streets of the city of Havana, where there were hundreds of buses and buses in circulation. Our friendly bartenders of that time, among whom was my father, who for me was the most sympathetic of all, exclaimed many times “step ahead, male!”, When the bus was full of passengers, to be able to break through and get there even the passenger who, seated at the end, walked towards the tramp and the distracted one to see if he made his trip without paying and said: “Do not be shorn, get your number.”

Pelencho was born one day that a Cuban woman of great beauty climbed into the vehicle, and that the guagüero exclaimed: “Ave Maria Pelencho!”, Expression that later picks up and popularizes Leopoldo Fernández (the popular Pototo or Tres Patines), which adds : “Ave Maria Pelencho, what a great thing life has!” that in the end he was left in only “bigger thing” just like our biggest curse “fuck! that stayed in” ¡Ñ!
Others say that Pelencho is a creation of Castor Vispo, the unrepeatable librettist, author of “La Tremenda Corte”, a popular radio program in which Leopoldo Fernández showed off his grace and his famous blood sausages as a comic actor, as well as Aníbal de Mar (Filomeno or Mr. Judge), an unrepeatable couple that is still imitated today. It seems that from there came the idea of associating Pelencho and feeling good with Hatuey beer.

Esas frases eran las principales campañas publicitarias de la Cerveza Hatuey, sobre todo en el noticiero de televisión, en el que Manolo Ortega se tomaba una cerveza de un solo trago.
Nadie puede decir a ciencia cierta quien fue Pelencho, no se sabe si es verdad que existió alguien con ese nombre en alguna parte de nuestro país. Lo que sí sabe es que fue un personaje inventado por un guagüero de una ruta de ómnibus que, atestada de pasajeros, recorría a diario las calles de la ciudad de La Habana, donde había cientos de guaguas y autobuses en circulación. Nuestros simpáticos guagüeros de entonces, entre los que estaba mi padre, que para mi era el más simpático de todos, exclamaban muchas veces “¡pasito alante, varón!”, cuando el ómnibus estaba lleno de pasajeros, para poder así abrirse paso y llegar hasta el pasajero que, sentado al final se hacia el remolón y el distraído para ver si realizaba su viaje sin pagar y le decía: “No se me guille, póngase pa´ su número”.
Entre lo sarcástico y lo burlón, al infeliz que se quedaba parado con la mano estirada, sin poder subir al transporte le decían: “¡La de atrás viene vacía!”, cosa que no era mentira. Pelencho nació un día que una cubana de gran hermosura subió al vehículo, y que el guagüero exclamó: “¡Ave Maria Pelencho!”, expresión que más tarde recoge y populariza Leopoldo Fernández (el popular Pototo o Tres Patines), el que le agrega: “¡Ave Maria Pelencho, que cosa más grande tiene la vida!” que al final se quedó en solo “cosa mas grande” igual que nuestra mayor maldición “¡coño! que se quedó en “¡ñó!

Otros dicen que Pelencho es una creación de Castor Vispo, el irrepetible libretista, autor de “La Tremenda Corte”, un popular programa de radio en el que Leopoldo Fernández hacia gala de su gracia y de sus famosas morcillas como actor cómico, al igual que Aníbal de Mar (Filomeno o el Sr. Juez), una pareja irrepetible y que aún hoy es imitada. Los nostálgicos parecemos cumplir una sentencia del Tremendo Juez y su Tremenda Corte: la de recordarlos por siempre, y los jóvenes que escuchan el programa se quedan extasiados. Cierta noche en el estadio de una cervecería, a Pototo se le ocurre exclamar: “¡Ave Maria Pelencho, que bien me siento!”.
Parece que de ahi vino la idea de asociar a Pelencho y sentirse bien con la cerveza Hatuey.
