José Ramón Chacón Vélez was born on November 9, 1912 in the southern coastal town of Santa Cruz del Sur in the province of Camagüey. As a child, he became interested in circuses and, above all, as a trapeze artist. The day he turned 20 a violent cyclone with winds over 250 kilometers per hour, known as the cyclone of 32, swept his hometown with huge waves over 9 meters high or 30 feet and the sea penetrated up to twenty kilometers inside, affecting cities such as Santa Cruz del Sur, Guayabal, Camagüey, Júcaro, Morón, Nuevitas, Ciego de Ávila, Florida, Puerto Tarafa, Pastelillo, Camajuaní, Caibarién and Jatibonico. The loss of human lives in the town of Santa Cruz del Sur is estimated at 2248 people. José Ramón is saved by climbing with his dog Lolita to a leafy and tall carob tree located behind his house, but his father is on the list of deceased. After this tragedy, he embarked on the long trip to Havana with his dog Lolita and the little money he managed to save.
He obtains trapeze apprentice employment in the circus Santos y Artigas. At that time, the star of Santos and Artigas was the great Polish trapeze artist Bronislav Korchinsky, of international fame and of which he becomes a disciple of El Gran Korchinsky, revealing himself as a great and new talent of the air and chooses the name of Chacumbeles, integrating his little dog Lolita to the act.
Korchinsky receives an offer from the United States and leaves leaving Chacumbeles as a high-wire star, accompanied by his dog and the first Cuban who manages to make a triple jump without a net. Ilona Szabó, “The Hungarian Muñequita”. Llona, a Hungarian Jewess of shocking beauty, joins the presentations and becomes her lover. But a black American named Harry Silver, from Mississippi who had come to Cuba to escape the racism that existed in the United States, and who used to dance, tap, play the banjo and juggle the circus.
While Chacumbeles did his act of tightrope with Lolita, he watched Ilona and Harry Silver kissing from the air, lost his balance and fell to the ground taking Lolita with her, who was crushed to death by her owner. Six months in the hospital with several fractures, two broken legs, and a rib had pierced his lung and the loss of his dog was the balance. It was lame and without strength in the hands as a result of the fall, so the circus is over for him.
He gets a job in the police, and in a deep repression, Chacumbeles returns to the same park that saw him arrive in Havana. One April night he takes his life with his police pistol. Chacumbeles went on to immortality in a song composed by Alejandro Mustelier and recorded by the Trio Servando Díaz, which suppresses the final “s”, and turns it into “Chacumbele”. As Cubans we like to “eat” or omit the final eses, it was easier to call it that.
They say that fate was cruel to Chacumbeles, but he did not forget the two guilty of his misfortune.

Ilona Szabó had left Cuba and gone to France, ignoring the Nazis and the wise warnings of friends and family. There she was imprisoned and taken to Bergen Belsen concentration camp where she died.

Ilona became one of their conquests and both embarked on a tumultuous and sensual relationship. LA TRISTE HISTORIA DE “CHACUMBELE”.. EL MISMITO SE MATÓ.!.
José Ramón Chacón Vélez nació el 9 de Noviembre de 1912 en el sureño pueblo costero de Santa Cruz del Sur en la provincia de Camagüey. Desde niño se interesó por los circos y sobre todo por ser trapecista. El día que cumplía 20 años un violento ciclón con vientos superiores a 250 kilómetros por hora, conocido como el ciclón del 32, arrasó su pueblo natal con inmensas olas de más de 9 metros de altura o 30 pies y el mar penetró hasta veinte kilómetros tierra adentro, afectando a ciudades como Santa Cruz del Sur, Guayabal, Camagüey, Júcaro, Morón, Nuevitas, Ciego de Ávila, Florida, Puerto Tarafa, Pastelillo, Camajuaní, Caibarién y Jatibonico. Las pérdidas de vidas humanas en el pueblo de Santa Cruz del Sur se calculan en 2248 personas. José Ramón se salva al subirse con su perra Lolita a un frondoso y alto algarrobo ubicado detrás de su casa , pero su padre está en la listas de fallecidos. Después de esta tragedia, emprende el largo viaje a La Habana con su perra Lolita y el poco dinero que lograra salvar.
Consigue empleo de aprendiz de trapecista en el circo Santos y Artigas. En ese momento, la estrella del Santos y Artigas era el gran trapecista polaco Bronislav Korchinsky, de fama internacional y del cual se hace discípulo de El Gran Korchinsky revelándose como un gran y nuevo talento de los aires y escoge el nombre de Chacumbeles, integrando a su perrita Lolita al acto.
Korchinsky recibe una oferta de Estados Unidos y se marcha dejando como estrella de la cuerda floja a Chacumbeles, acompañado de su perra y el primer cubano que logra hacer un salto triple sin red. Ilona Szabó, “La Muñequita Húngara”. Llona, una judía húngara de belleza impactante, se suma al las presentaciones y se convierte en su amante. Pero un norteamericano negro de nombre Harry Silver, de Mississippi que había venido a Cuba para escapar del racismo que existía en Estados Unidos, y que antaba, bailaba tap, tocaba el banjo y hacía malabarismos se incorpora al circo.
Mientras Chacumbeles hacía su acto de la cuerda floja con Lolita, contempló desde los aires a Ilona y Harry Silver besándose, perdió el equilibrio y cayó al suelo llevándose consigo a Lolita la cual murió aplastada por su dueño. Seis meses en el hospital con varias fracturas, las dos piernas rotas, y una costilla había perforado su pulmón y la pérdida de su perrita fue el saldo. Quedó cojo y sin fuerzas en las manos a consecuencia de la caída, así que el circo se acabó para el.
Consigue trabajo en la policía, y sumido en una profunda represión, regresa Chacumbeles al mismo parque que lo vio llegar a La Habana. Una noche de abril se quita la vida con su pistola de policía. Chacumbeles pasó a la inmortalidad en una canción compuesta por Alejandro Mustelier y grabada por el Trío Servando Díaz, que suprime la”s” final, y lo convierte en “Chacumbele”. Como a los cubanos nos gusta “comernos” u omitir las eses finales, se nos hizo más fácil llamarlo así.
Cuentan que el destino fue cruel con Chacumbeles, pero no olvidó a los dos culpables de su desgracia.
ILONA SZABO, LA DESGRACIA DE CHACUMBELE.
Ilona Szabó había abandonado Cuba y se había marchado a Francia, ignorando a los Nazis y las sabias advertencias de amigos y familiares. Allí fue presa y llevada al campo de concentración de Bergen Belsen donde murió.
Y el negro Harry Silver se había convertido en famoso, y por ello Harry jamás volvió a tocar a una negra, dedicándose exclusivamente a las mujeres blancas. Ilona se convirtió en una de sus conquistas y ambos emprendieron una tumultuosa y sensual relación. Unos años después decidió regresar a Laurel a ver a su madre que estaba en su lecho de muerte y después regresar a su maravillosa vida de Dios de Ébano en Cuba . Pero se olvidó de que Mississippi no era La Habana. Se atrevió con una mujer blanca, y esa misma noche el Ku Klux Klan lo sacó a golpes y patadas de su casa y al día siguiente amaneció colgado de un árbol. Había sido castrado y con su miembro en la boca, como advertencia para los negros que se metían con blancas.
El que la hace la paga y los dos pagaron.
