Cuban actor Andy Garcia is among the 24 winners this year by the Spanish Government with the Gold Medal of Merit in Fine Arts.
The Council of Ministers, which approved the proposal of the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, highlighted in a press release the “charitable initiatives” of the actor, “his closeness to Spain, and his firm defense of Hispanics in Hollywood.”

El actor cubano Andy García está entre los 24 galardonados este año por el Gobierno español con la Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes.
El Consejo de Ministros, que aprobó la propuesta del Ministro de Educación, Cultura y Deporte, destacó en una nota de prensa las “iniciativas benéficas” del actor, “su cercanía a España, y su firme defensa de los hispanos en Hollywood”.
“Los intocables de Eliot Ness, fue la película que supuso el pistoletazo de salida en su carrera, si bien el papel de Vincent Mancini Corleone, el hijo de Sonny Corleone, en El padrino III, le valió una nominación al Oscar al mejor actor secundario”, recordó el Gobierno español en una nota de prensa. “Esta nominación convirtió a García en una estrella mundialmente conocida. Años después, la saga de Ocean’s Eleven; Cuando un hombre ama a una mujer o City Island han ensanchado su fama y talento. Se estrenó también como director en 2005 con La ciudad perdida”.
La Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes distingue a personas y entidades “que hayan destacado en el campo de la creación artística y cultural o hayan prestado notorios servicios en el fomento, desarrollo o difusión del arte y la cultura o en la conservación del patrimonio artístico”.
En la lista este año están además los cantautores Luis Eduardo Aute y José Luis Perales; el actor Juan Echanove, el fallecido humorista Chiquito de la Calzada, el director de fotografía José Luis Alcaine, la cantante y actriz María Dolores González Flores (Lolita), la bailaora y coreógrafa Eva Yerbabuena, la banda de pop rock Hombres G., el compositor Alberto Iglesias y el humorista gráfico Andrés Rábago (El Roto, del diario El País).
También la actriz María Luisa Merlo, la banda de rock mexicana Maná, el cocinero José Andrés, el fallecido torero Dámaso González Carrasco, el escritor Jordi Sierra i Fabra y la galerista Thessa Herold, entre otros.
