Harold Gramatges (26 September 1918 – 16 December 2008) was a Cuban composer, pianist, and teacher.
Gramatges was born in Santiago, Cuba. In 1941, he entered the conservatory in Santiago de Cuba to study under professor Dulce María Serret, and went on to study composition at the Municipal Conservatoire of Havana with Amadeo Roldán and José Ardévol (Rodriguez 2001), and with professor Flora Mora.
In 1942, he travelled to United States to complete his studies at Berkshire Music Center under Aaron Copland (composition) and Serge Koussevitzky (conducting) (Rodriguez 2001).
He later founded and directed Cuba’s Municipal Conservatory Orchestra, where he worked as professor of Harmony, Composition, Aesthetics and Music History. In 1958, he received the Reichold of Caribbean and Central America Prize, conferred by the Detroit Orchestra for his Sinfonía en mi. In 1959, he created the Musical Department at Casa de las Américas. He has spent his life working on transforming and developing musical education in Cuba. In 1961 and 1964, he was the Cuban Ambassador to France.
His work tends to bridge the forms of contemporary classical and modern Cuban or Latin American music. His catalog includes symphonic, chamber, vocal and incidental music for theater and movies.
He died in December 2008 in La Habana, Cuba.

Harold Gramatges (26 de septiembre de 1918 – 16 de diciembre de 2008) fue un compositor, pianista y maestro cubano.
Gramatges nació en Santiago, Cuba. En 1941, ingresó en el conservatorio de Santiago de Cuba para estudiar con la profesora Dulce María Serret, y luego estudió composición en el Conservatorio Municipal de La Habana con Amadeo Roldán y José Ardévol (Rodríguez 2001) y con la profesora Flora Mora.
En 1942, viajó a los Estados Unidos para completar sus estudios en el Berkshire Music Center bajo Aaron Copland (composición) y Serge Koussevitzky (dirección) (Rodríguez 2001).
Más tarde fundó y dirigió la Orquesta Municipal de Conservatorio de Cuba, donde trabajó como profesor de Armonía, Composición, Estética e Historia de la Música. En 1958, recibió el Premio Reichold del Caribe y América Central, otorgado por la Orquesta de Detroit por su Sinfonía en mi. En 1959, creó el Departamento Musical en Casa de las Américas. Ha dedicado toda su vida a transformar y desarrollar la educación musical en Cuba. En 1961 y 1964, fue el embajador cubano en Francia.
Su trabajo tiende a unir las formas de la música contemporánea clásica y moderna cubana o latinoamericana. Su catálogo incluye música sinfónica, de cámara, vocal e incidental para teatro y cine.
Murió en diciembre de 2008 en La Habana, Cuba.
