Miguel Díaz-Canel has just been appointed president of Cuba. It is the first, after almost six decades, that does not have the surname Castro. His wife, Lis Cuesta Peraza, becomes – without hustle and bustle – the first lady of Cuba, although the political system of the island does not include this figure in her Parliament.

Cuesta Peraza, 47, is from Holguín. She currently works in Havana as director of the Academic Services Department of the Paradiso Agency, which belongs to the Ministry of Culture. This company is responsible for organizing cultural and academic trips to foreigners interested in Cuban culture.

He met Diaz-Canel after he was sent in 2003 to Holguin as the first secretary of the Communist Party in the province. At that time, the current Cuban president was married to Marta Villanueva, a stomatologist, with whom he had two children. Although his work in Holguín was not what was expected, at that time he had an affair with the young leader.

Lis had graduated with a degree in pedagogy in Holguín, then did a master’s degree in Pedagogical Sciences and worked first in the communication department of the Provincial Sector of Culture and then went to direct the Provincial Book and Literature Center (CPLL). While there, he met his current partner.

Marta Villanueva and Díaz Canel ended up divorcing and Lis Cuesta marrying him. She also had two children from her previous marriage to a soldier.

This woman is seen little in the media but from time to time, in some other loose image, the press has taken her accompanying her husband during official visits of the Government to other countries. In 2015 he went to North Korea for a meeting with President Kim Jong-un. A year later she was received in Japan by the wife of the prime minister of that country. On both trips she accompanied her husband. In 2017, he appeared in a photograph published by the state news agency Prensa Latina, arriving in Bolivia on the arm of his partner, breaking the old regime tradition of not showing the wives of its leaders in public.

During the elections of March 11, she reappeared in the hands of her husband – and without bodyguards in sight – in the electoral college of Villa Clara, where she voted. That time, as in his visit to Bolivia, the official press ignored his presence without publishing the photos at both times. Now, with the assumption of her husband, Lis stomps on a floor that is constantly changing.

Su esposa, Lis Cuesta Peraza, pasa a ser -sin bullicios mediante- la primera dama de Cuba, aunque el sistema político de la Isla no contempla esta figura en su Parlamento.

Cuesta Peraza, de 47 años, es holguinera. Actualmente trabaja en La Habana como directora del departamento de Servicios Académicos de la Agencia Paradiso, perteneciente al Ministerio de Cultura. Dicha empresa se encarga de organizar viajes culturales y académicos a los extranjeros interesados en la cultura cubana.

Conoció a Díaz-Canel luego de que este fuera enviado en 2003 a Holguín como primer secretario del Partido Comunista en la provincia. En ese entonces, el actual presidente cubano estaba casado con Marta Villanueva, estomatóloga, con quien tenía dos hijos. Aunque su trabajo en Holguín no fue lo que se esperaba, en esa época tuvo un romance con la jovencita dirigente.

Lis se había graduado de licenciatura en pedagogía en Holguín, luego hizo un máster en Ciencias Pedagógicas y trabajó primero en el departamento de comunicación del Sectorial Provincial de Cultura y después se fue a dirigir el Centro Provincial del Libro y la Literatura (CPLL). Estando allí, conoció a su actual pareja.

Marta Villanueva y Díaz Canel terminaron divorciándose y Lis Cuesta casándose con él. Ella también tenía dos hijos de su anterior matrimonio con un militar.

A esta mujer se le ve poco en los medios pero de vez en cuando, en alguna que otra imagen suelta, la prensa la ha sacado acompañando a su esposo durante visitas oficiales del Gobierno a otros países. En 2015 se fue a Corea del Norte para un encuentro con el mandatario Kim Jong-un. Un año después fue recibida en Japón por la esposa del primer ministro de ese país. En ambos viajes acompañaba a su esposo. En 2017 apareció en una fotografía divulgada por la agencia estatal Prensa Latina llegando a Bolivia tomada del brazo de su pareja, rompiendo la vieja tradición del régimen de no mostrar en público a las esposas de sus dirigentes.

Durante las elecciones del 11 de marzo pasado, ella volvió a aparecer de la mano de su marido –y sin guardaespaldas a la vista–, en el colegio electoral de Villa Clara, donde votó. Aquella vez, al igual que en su visita a Bolivia, la prensa oficial ignoró su presencia sin publicar las fotos en ambos momentos. Ahora, con la asunción de su marido, Lis pisa fuerte sobre un suelo que está en constante transformación.
