In Bejucal, Havana still many wonder if some day will be reborn the one that years before the Castrist Revolution of 1959, it was called “The City of the Children”, created and attended by the Catholic priest Ismael Testé, better known by all like the Father “Testé”, one of the most important humanitarian tasks of all the republican history in Cuba.

Monsignor Ismael Testé y Pérez was a native of Bejucal and parish priest in Santiago de las Vegas, where he dedicated himself after his ordination to attract Cuban youth to the Church. He had a great personality, was witty and always restless.

Father Ismael Testé realized a dream that for a long time had not allowed him to sleep peacefully: the creation of a Center (The City of Children), where children and young people left homeless or with serious family problems, could reside and receive instruction and civic and moral education, to avoid becoming guests of the Reclusorio de Torrens, where young people with behavioral problems are secluded. The idea, received by citizens, after being disclosed by the media, had the monetary support of these, through public collections, and entrepreneurs and merchants, who cooperated with it, both economically and with donations of media materials and equipment.

The City of the Children of Father Testé – as it was popularly called – grew and developed, and became an obligatory reference of something noble and just, until the arrival of the new regime, which, as with all institutions teachers
religious and private, decided that he was the only responsible, both for education and training of new citizens: the so-called “new man”. Shelter facilities, classrooms, workshops, sports fields and others were languishing with time, until one day, a military unit was installed in the place, which used the built and expanded it, in correspondence with their interests.

In the place still has not been produced the return to its original function: the education and preparation of young people and children as citizens. The dream of Father Ismael Testé, amassed with the voluntary contributions of the citizens, was truncated and disappeared, and those who were his disciples, distributed by different centers, lost the initial bond created in the vortex of the years.

Today, at least here, nothing is said about him or his work: it is as if they had not existed. However, The City of Children was a beautiful dream come true, because of the will of a priest and thousands of Cubans. It is not fair to be diluted in the memory.

The purpose of “The City of Children” was to pick up poor, homeless and orphaned children in a home where they would receive general attention. This project was materialized with the economic help provided by the population. There even came to be a television program to collect donations.

Father Teste visited the homes of the families who invited him, preferably if they offered him lunch or food. “The City of Children” in Bejucal, was built on top of a hill at the entrance of the town and its financing ran in addition to the general population that helped them with a Cuban television program directed by the same father Teste and some of his assistants in the magnificent humanitarian work.

Father Testé we remember him as a great sacred orator, when in the 1940s and 50s, as pastor of the Church of Pilar in Havana, through the radio of that time, his famous and long-awaited national television was broadcast throughout Cuba. “Sermon of the 7 words” on Good Friday of each year.

The City of Children, as it has always been called, ceased to be that beautiful place, with a social work also very beautiful to become what today exists there, a military unit. Some buildings have also been built on the site.

With the advent of the so-called Revolucion Castrista and after that, after the year 1959, Monsignor Testé settled, like many other Cuban priests, in foreign lands, finally achieving, after many comings and goings, establishing himself in the large and populous archdiocese of Houston, State of Texas, where he officiated in a very well known and extraordinary way until his last days.

But of what was that center, which was intended for Catholic education for the little ones, nothing has remained. The educational project of this Bejucal priest had a tower-shaped building annexed; of which today there are only the walls and the roof that ends as if it were a small pyramid.

Those who have been able to visit say that on the top floor there is a kind of large window, from which you can see a good part of the town of Bejucal.

The use that is currently given to these places, of course that has nothing to do with the social work of the Catholic Church. The air of that religious landscape and peace of the times of Father Testé is no longer breathed there.

The City of Children was a beautiful dream come true, because of the will of a priest and thousands of Cubans.

IN CUBA, ESTA ES LA HISTORIA DE “LA CIUDAD DE LOS NIÑOS” Y DE “EL PADRE TESTÉ”.

En Bejucal, La Habana todavía muchos se preguntan si algun dia volverá a renacer la que años antes de la Revolución Castrista de 1959, se le llamara “La Ciudad de los Niños”, creada y atendida por el sacerdote católico Ismael Testé, más conocido por todos como el Padre “Testé”, una de las más importante tareas humanitarias de toda la historia republicana en Cuba.

Monseñor Ismael Testé y Pérez era oriundo de Bejucal y Párroco en Santiago de las Vegas, donde se dedicó después de su ordenación a atraer a la juventud cubana a la Iglesia. Tenía una gran personalidad, era ocurrente y siempre inquieto.

El Padre Ismael Testé realizó un sueño que, desde hacía mucho tiempo no le había permitido dormir tranquilo: la creación de un Centro (La Ciudad de los Niños), donde niños y jóvenes desamparados o con graves problemas familiares, pudieran residir y recibir instrucción y educación cívica y moral, para evitar se convirtieran en huéspedes del Reclusorio de Torrens, donde se recluian a los jóvenes con problemas de comportamiento. La idea, acogida por los ciudadanos, después de ser divulgada por los medios de comunicación, contó con el apoyo monetario de éstos, mediante colectas públicas, y de empresarios y comerciantes, que cooperaron con ella, tanto de forma económica como con donaciones de medios materiales y equipos.

La Ciudad de los Niños del Padre Testé –así se le denominaba popularmente- creció y se desarrolló, y se convirtió en una referencia obligada de algo noble y justo, hasta la llegada del nuevo régimen, el cual, al igual que con todas las instituciones docentes
religiosas y privadas, decidió que él era el único responsable, tanto de la educación como de la formación de los nuevos ciudadanos: el denominado “hombre nuevo”. Instalaciones de albergue, aulas, talleres, campos deportivos y otros fueron languideciendo con el tiempo, hasta que un día, en el lugar se instaló una unidad militar, la cual utilizó lo construido y lo amplió, en correspondencia con sus intereses.

En el lugar aún no se ha producido el regreso a su función original: la educación y preparación de jóvenes y niños como ciudadanos. El sueño del Padre Ismael Testé, amasado con los aportes voluntarios de los ciudadanos, quedó trunco y desapareció, y los que fueron sus discípulos, repartidos por diferentes centros, perdieron el vínculo inicial creado, en la vorágine de los años.

Hoy, al menos aquí, nada se dice ni de él ni de su obra: es como si no hubieran existido. Sin embargo, La Ciudad de los Niños fue un bello sueño hecho realidad, por la voluntad de un sacerdote y de miles de cubanos. No es justo que se diluya en el recuerdo.

La finalidad de “La Ciudad de los Niños” fue el recoger a niños pobres, desamparados y huérfanos en un hogar donde recibirían atención general. Este proyecto se materializó con la ayuda económica que brindó la población. Incluso llegó a existir un programa televisivo para recabar donativos.

El Padre Teste visitaba las casas de las familias que lo invitaban, preferiblemente si le ofrecían almuerzo o comida. “La Ciudad de los Niños” en Bejucal, se construyó en lo alto de una loma a la entrada del pueblo y su financiamiento corrió ademas de con la poblacion en general que los ayudaba con un programa de la television cubana dirigido por el mismo padre Teste y algunos de sus ayudantes en la magnífica obra humanitaria.

El Padre Testé lo recordamos como un gran orador sagrado, cuando en la década del 1940 y 50, siendo párroco de la Iglesia del Pilar en La Habana, a través de la radio de entonces se transmitía en cadena nacional a toda Cuba su famoso y esperado “Sermón de las 7 palabras” el Viernes Santo de cada año.

La Ciudad de los Niños, como se le ha llamado siempre, dejó de ser aquel bello lugar, con una obra social también muy hermosa para convertirse en lo que hoy existe allí, una unidad militar. También se han construido en el lugar algunos edificios.

Con el advenimiento de la llamada Revolución Castrista y posterior a esta después del año de 1959 Monseñor Testé se radicó, como otros muchos sacerdotes cubanos, en tierras extranjeras logrando finalmente, después de muchas idas y venidas, el establecerse en la grande y populosa archidiócesis de Houston, estado de Texas, donde ofició de forma muy conocida y extraordinaria hasta sus últimos dias.

Pero de lo que fue aquel centro, que estuvo destinado a la educación católica para los más pequeños, no ha quedado nada. El proyecto educacional de este sacerdote de Bejucal tenía anexo un edificio en forma de torre; del cual hoy solo quedan las paredes y el techo que termina como si fuera una pequeña pirámide.

Los que lo han podido visitar dicen que en el último piso existe una especie de ventana grande, de la cual se puede alcanzar a ver una buena parte del pueblo de Bejucal.

La utilización que se le da en la actualidad a estos parajes, por supuesto que nada tiene que ver con la obra social de la iglesia católica. Ya no se aspira allí el aire de aquel paisaje religioso y de paz de los tiempos del padre Testé.

La Ciudad de los Niños fue un bello sueño hecho realidad, por la voluntad de un sacerdote y de miles de cubanos.
