Servando José Florentino Ovies y Rodríguez, was a young man of 36, with black hair, born on February 21, 1876 in Aviles, Spain, son of Ramón Ovies and Maria del Carmen Rodríguez, but who had lived much of his life in Havana .

La historia de Servando Ovies es la de muchos asturianos que cruzaron el charco en busca de un futuro que aquí no tenían. Se les llamó indianos, americanos o cubanos, en el caso de Avilés, dado que en la villa se eligió mayoritariamente aquella isla antillana como destino.

Trabajó para la empresa familiar de Rodríguez & Co. que estaba en el negocio de importación, con sede en La Habana. En 1912 vivía en La Habana con su esposa Eva López del Vallardo y su hijo, Ramón Servando.

Al principio de conocerse el trágico accidente del Titanic todo o casi todo se juzgó como pura especulación mal intencionados en la propia identificación de sus víctimas, pero no es mentira que a bordo del transatlántico Titanic, viajó un residente de la isla caribeña, que sacó un boleto en primera clase, cuyo costo ascendía a cuatro mil 350 dólares.

Estando en viajes de negocios, José Ovies abordó el Titanic en la ciudad de Cherburgo. Su boleto de viaje era el PC-17562 £ 27 14s 5d con derecho a alojarse en el camarote D 43, en la cabina de Primera Clase, donde viajaban los pasajeros de más afluencia económica, entre el celebridades invitadas por los propietarios de la naviera.

Fue identificado además por su ropa que era un abrigo y chaleco negros; pantalones de sarga azul; camisa gris, marcada “J. R.”

Eva, su esposa, después de la recuperación de su cadáver hizo una reclamación a la Compañía del barco por $75,000 por la vida de su esposo y $2,300 por las pérdidas en propiedades.

Su cuerpo en su momento fue identificado como el de J. A. Rodríguez de la Compañía habanera Rodriguez & Co.y su cuerpo inicialmente enterrado en el Cementerio de Fairview in Halifax el 3 May pero fue exhumado más tarde para ser enterrado finalmente en el Cementerio Católico del Monte Olivos el 15 de Mayo de 1912..

El Titanic, naufragó en la madrugada del 14 al 15 de abril de 1912 en su viaje inaugural y mil 514 personas de las dos mil 223 a bordo, murieron en una de las mayores catástrofes marinas de la historia, ocurrida en tiempo de paz.
