The increase in the arrival of cruise ships to Cuba is gradually raising the number of foreign visitors on the island, but negatively affects the tourist income indicator because these travelers do not stay in hotels, most of which are managed by state-owned companies. “The growth of cruise travel is offsetting the arrival of visitors, although it negatively affects the tourist income indicator by not making hotel stays,” said Cuban academic Dr. José Luis Perelló Cabrera in an analysis based on official data.

In the same report, published this week by the magazine Excelencias Cuba, Perelló Cabrera reveals that tourism on the island is beginning to experience “a discreet recovery”, after the collapse recorded last year with the impact of several hurricanes and the resurgence of the travel policies of the United States against Cuba. During the first semester of 2018, some 387,496 tourists arrived in the country by sea, which translates into an increase of more than 20% in relation to the same period of 2017. In those months, some 17 cruise lines with more than twenty vessels operated, and four of them with itineraries from the USA. (Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruises Lines, Carnival and Pearl Seas).

Visiting Cuba on cruises makes it possible for visitors, according to Perelló Cabrera, to explore the main port cities of the Island (Havana, Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba) in a short time, through the excursions included in the tour package and without any need to stay in any hotel. In general, last June closed with the same number of arrivals of international visitors as in the same month of the previous year, which indicates a gradual recovery of the branch, said the specialist.

The accumulated decrease until May 31 represented 6.6% in relation to the same period of 2017; the “discreet recovery in the month of June allows to close the first semester with 152 thousand 354 fewer visitors than in the first semester of last year”.

On the current landscape of the sector on the island, Perelló Cabrera points out that, of the 69,041 existing rooms, 74.2% are located in tourist poles of sun and beach. As a complementary offer, the network of private hostels also has 23,185 rooms throughout the country “that provide a high quality personalized service.”

“For the current year, 4.825 new rooms will be completed, among which stand out the high standard hotels in Havana, Varadero, Cayería Norte; as well as in other cities where more than 30 projects are completed with some 700 rooms for circuits, “he said.

En el mismo informe, publicado esta semana por la revista Excelencias Cuba, Perelló Cabrera revela que el turismo en la Isla está comenzando a experimentar “una discreta recuperación”, luego del colapso registrado el pasado año con el impacto de varios huracanes y el recrudecimiento de las políticas de viaje de Estados Unidos contra Cuba. Durante el primer semestre de 2018, unos 387.496 turistas llegaron al país por la vía marítima, lo cual se traduce en un aumento de más del 20% en relación al mismo periodo de 2017. De ese total, el 30.5% fueron estadounidenses y el 31.3% europeos.

Operaron en esos meses unas 17 líneas de cruceros con más de una veintena de buques, y cuatro de ellas con itinerarios desde EE.UU. (Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruises Lines, Carnival y Pearl Seas).

Visitar Cuba en cruceros posibilita a los visitantes, según refiere Perelló Cabrera, que en poco tiempo puedan explorar las principales ciudades portuarias de la Isla (La Habana, Cienfuegos y Santiago de Cuba) a través de las excursiones incluidas en el paquete turístico y sin necesidad de alojarse en ningún hotel. En sentido general, el pasado mes de junio cerró con igual número de llegada de visitantes internacionales que en el mismo mes del año previo, lo que indica una paulatina recuperación de la rama, indicó el especialista.

El decrecimiento acumulado hasta el 31 de mayo representó un 6.6% en relación a igual período de 2017; la “discreta recuperación en el mes de junio permite cerrar el primer semestre con 152 mil 354 visitantes menos que en el primer semestre del año pasado”.

Sobre el panorama actual del sector en la Isla, Perelló Cabrera señala que, de las 69.041 habitaciones existentes, el 74.2% se encuentran en polos turísticos de sol y playa. Como oferta complementaria, la red de hostales privados cuenta además con 23.185 habitaciones a lo largo y ancho del país “que prestan un servicio personalizado de alta calidad”.

“Para el presente año, se concluirán 4.825 nuevas habitaciones, dentro de las que se destacan los hoteles de alto estándar en La Habana, Varadero, Cayería Norte; así como en otras ciudades donde se terminan más de 30 proyectos con unas 700 habitaciones para circuitos”, acotó.
