Although the aboriginal population of Cuba had been almost completely extinguished before the town of Mayarí was founded in May 1757, and its racial and cultural redoubts dissolved little by little in the ajiaco of Cuban mestizaje, many came to believe in this zone the legend about the appearance of an Indian in a cave near the Mayaricero Valley (in Holguín).

But Fermín or the “Cacique Mayarí” as he calls himself, has his character well assembled. He dresses as an Indian and for two years has built his settlement on the top of a hill. Since he was little, he knows the local caves and trails and is attracted to the natural culture of the aborigines. This knowledge, together with his love of building with rustic materials, motivated the idea that has attracted attention and received the approval of the neighbors.

There were photos and rumors that fed the myth, unveiled a few months ago. It is already a fact of public knowledge that it is only a spontaneous cultural project of the young Fermín Olivero Bárcena, of 27 years old, neighbor of the surroundings of the hills of Piedra Gorda and Seboruco.

“A relative archaeologist visited these caves a few years ago and told me about the richness of this site, everything that remains to be explored and discovered, here in this area remains of the oldest human beings of the Caribbean have been found. attracted by these things, I already had some rustic constructions in my house and collected rare stones, which motivated the visit of many people, even foreigners, “says Fermín.

“That’s why, two years ago, it occurred to me to start building in a flat area of ​​a nearby mountain, next to a cave,” he continues. “I started dressing as an Indian there, and in February of this year people started visiting me, first a few, then groups, and now several groups a day,” he says.

“I am glad that my initiative pleases people and comforts me after so much work, I treat everyone and I even give them headbands of yarey fabrics adorned with feathers, which I make myself, I do not charge anything, but some leave me money in solidarity. I do not reject it because every time I can spend less time looking for my life in something else “.

Above all, the attraction that your initiative generates among visitors impresses. He considers his work an open-air museum. Adorn your hut with curujeyes, rare stones, stick seats and a spear with silica tip.

It is evident that Cacique Mayarí can not satisfy the demand of the visitors, has not finished with one group and another arrives. But he is still alone.

“I’ve never promoted this, people find out and come in. A pesar de que la población aborigen de Cuba se había extinguido casi completamente antes de fundarse el poblado de Mayarí en mayo de 1757, y de que sus reductos raciales y culturales se disolvieron poco a poco en el ajiaco del mestizaje cubano, muchos llegaron a creer en esta zona la leyenda sobre la aparición de un indio en una cueva aledaña al valle mayaricero (en Holguín).

Este conocimiento, unido a su afición por construir con materiales rústicos, motivó la idea que ha llamado la atención y recibido la aprobación de los vecinos.

Circulaban fotos y rumores que alimentaban el mito, develado hace unos pocos meses. Ya es un hecho de conocimiento público que tan solo se trata un proyecto cultural espontáneo del joven Fermín Olivero Bárcena, de 27 años, vecino de los alrededores de las lomas de Piedra Gorda y Seboruco.

“Un pariente arqueólogo visitó estas cuevas hace unos años atrás y me habló de la riqueza de este sitio, de todo lo que falta por explorar y descubrir. Aquí en esta zona se han encontrado restos de los seres humanos más antiguos del Caribe. Yo, atraído por estas cosas, ya tenía algunas construcciones rústicas en mi casa y recolectaba piedras raras, lo cual motivó la visita de mucha gente, incluso extranjeros”, comenta Fermín.

“Por eso, hace dos años, se me ocurrió empezar a construir en un área llana de una montaña cercana, al lado de una cueva”, continúa. “Comencé a vestirme de indio allí. En febrero de este año la gente empezó a visitarme. Primero unos pocos, luego por grupos a cada rato, ahora varios grupos al día”, relata.

“Me alegra que mi iniciativa le guste a la gente y me reconforta después de tanto trabajo. Atiendo a todos y hasta les obsequio cintillos de yarey tejidos adornados con plumas, que yo mismo confecciono. No cobro nada, pero algunos me dejan dinero solidariamente. No lo rechazo porque cada vez puedo dedicar menos tiempo a buscarme la vida en otra cosa”.

Sobre todo, impresiona la atracción que genera su iniciativa en los visitantes. Él considera su obra un museo al aire libre. Adorna su choza con curujeyes, piedras raras, asientos de palos y una lanza con punta de sílice.

En tanto, el número de visitantes que recibe el proyecto aumenta cada día. Fermín cuenta con el apoyo de un historiador para mejorar el lugar y su personaje.

“Esto es tan solo una idea que se me ocurrió y parece que es buena, porque a la gente le ha gustado mucho. Tan solo quiero que me apoyen y que no me obliguen a destruir este proyecto cultural. Sería un crimen porque ya no es solo mío, sino de todos aquellos a los que les ha gustado”, concluye Fermín, preocupado.
