Many times it is the option that we have at hand when nobody at home wants to cook, or if we are passing through and with haste, or if we have little money. “Pizza is cheap and it’s the fastest you can eat,” said one of the interviewees for this video.

Havana is a city where, every once in a while, you find a pizza outlet. Most of the time the quality is not the best, but still, what remedy we have left?

Students, parents who walk their children on vacation days, all go to pizza as the immediate and cheap option.

The Cuban pizza, moreover, has its characteristics: it is small, fluffy, it is made with the cheese that is, with enough fat and tomato sauce. Even so, it is often very tasty.

Even many foreigners passing through the city are very attracted to them. “It’s the best,” said one interviewee. The typical pizza costs 12 Cuban pesos, about 50 cents.

Increasingly, pizzeria businesses are opening throughout the city.

One of the most popular businesses in Havana is that of Marta Castaeda, owner of the “A Mi Manera” pizzeria, who said that her pizzeria is attracting attention in social networks and among tourists due to its delivery method. Their pizzas are prepared on the upper floors of a building in Havana and they are lowered using a fan cover as a tray.

“Here we have to find a way to sell, to be able to maintain the license, so that’s what we have done with our resources, look for solutions,” said Castaeda.

Pizza is a food in Cuba that gained much popularity in the 1990s, during the Special Period, as many families sold pizzas in their homes, when there was barely anything to eat in Cuba.

Los estudiantes, los padres que pasean a sus hijos los días de vacaciones, todos acuden a la pizza como la opción inmediata y barata.

La pizza cubana, además, tiene sus características: es pequeña, esponjosa, se hace con el queso que se encuentre, con bastante grasa y salsa de tomate. Aún así, muchas veces resulta bien sabrosa.

Incluso a muchos extranjeros de paso por la ciudad les llama mucho la atención. “Es lo mejor”, dijo un entrevistado. La pizza típica cuesta 12 pesos cubanos, unos 50 centavos de dólar.

Cada vez más, se están abriendo negocios de pizzerías por toda la ciudad.
