Cuban poet Carilda Oliver Labra, one of the most outstanding authors of Cuba and Hispano-America, died Wednesday at 96 years of age in the Cuban city of Matanzas.

Born on July 6, 1922 in that city located 100 kilometers east of Havana, and where she always lived, Oliver Labra graduated in law at the University of Havana in 1945, a profession she practiced in her hometown with his passion for poetry.

During her life she wrote about 40 books and some of them were translated into other languages ​​such as English, French, German and Bulgarian.

In her vast literary work, which began in 1943 with the selection of poems “Lyrical Prelude”, highlight titles such as “To the South of my throat”, “I mess up, love, I mess up” and “I have lost a man”, that stand out for their load of eroticism.

For his outstanding contributions to the poetry of Cuba and Hispano-America she received multiple awards, including the National Prize for Literature in 1997.

She also obtained the second place in the International Poetry Competition, organized by the National Broadcasting Co. of New York, United States, in 1947, and four years later she received the Hispanic American Competition Award, organized by the American Athenaeum of Washington, to celebrate the tercentenary of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz.

La poetisa cubana Carilda Oliver Labra, una de las autoras más sobresalientes de Cuba e Hispanoamérica, murió hoy miércoles a los 96 años de edad en la ciudad cubana de Matanzas.

Nacida el 6 de julio de 1922 en esa urbe ubicada 100 kilómetros al este de La Habana, y donde siempre vivió, Oliver Labra se graduó en Derecho en la Universidad de La Habana en 1945, profesión que ejerció en su ciudad natal junto a su pasión por la poesía.

Durante su vida escribió unos 40 libros y algunos de ellos fueron traducidos a otros idiomas como inglés, francés, alemán y búlgaro.

En su vasta obra literaria, que comenzó en 1943 con la selección de poemas “Preludio lírico”, resaltan títulos como “Al Sur de mi garganta”, “Me desordeno, amor, me desordeno” y “Se me ha perdido un hombre”, que resaltan por su carga de erotismo.

Por sus destacados aportes a la poesía de Cuba e Hispanoamérica recibió múltiples reconocimientos, incluido el Premio Nacional de Literatura en 1997.

También obtuvo el segundo lugar en el Concurso Internacional de Poesía, organizado por la National Broadcasting Co. de Nueva York, Estados Unidos, en 1947, y cuatro años después recibió el Premio del Certamen Hispanoamericano, convocado por el Ateneo Americano de Washington, para celebrar el tricentenario de Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.
