Far from what most people think, the word ‘jinetera’ in Cuba does not come from a horseman or a horse, graphically hinting at the very probable position in which we believe that these unfortunate women earn their living in the difficult situation of the Current Cuba.

This palabreja is derived from the French name Ginette, with which Québécois (Canadians of French origin) are designated to prostitutes. If we take into account that 90% of tourism to Cuba comes from Quebec, it is easy to understand the reason for the origin of the word. The rest is the adaptation made by the vivid imagination of the cubiches.

To add another interesting note of these curiosities. we add that the swamps, once unhealthy and inhospitable, that surround New Orleans, in the United States was the place where brothels were preferentially built; said swamps are known, still, with the name of bayou.

Knowing that the first prostitutes imported into Cuba after the Republic was formed were from that city of Louisiana, we will understand the reason why in Cuba brothels with the name of ballú were known.

Lejos de lo que casi todo el mundo piensa, la palabra ‘jinetera’ en Cuba no viene de jinete ni de jinetear, haciendo gráfica alusión a la muy probable posición en la que creemos que estas desdichadas mujeres ganan su vida en las difícil situación de la Cuba actual.

Esta palabreja se deriva del nombre francés Ginette, con el cual designan los quebequenses (canadienses de origen francés) a las prostitutas. Si tenemos en cuenta de que el 90% del turismo hacia Cuba viene de Quebec, es fácil comprender la razón del origen de la palabra. El resto es la adaptación hecha por la viva imaginación de los cubiches.

Para añadir otra interesante nota de estas curiosidades. añadimos que los pantanos, antaño insalubres e inhóspitos, que rodean a New Orleans, en Estados Unidos era el lugar donde preferentemente se construían los prostíbulos; dichos pantanos se conocen, todavía, con el nombre de bayou.

Sabiendo que las primeras prostitutas importadas a Cuba después de constituida la República eran oriundas de esa ciudad de la Luisiana, comprenderemos la razón por la que en Cuba se conocían los burdeles con el apelativo de ballú.
