‘I do not impose or dictate anything’: Mariela Castro breaks the silence before the opposition to equal marriage.

The director of the National Center for Sexual Education (CENESEX), Mariela Castro Espín, daughter of Raúl Castro, broke the silence around the controversy of equal marriage and said on Friday that she does not dictate “anything”, referring to the “debate” “that has raised the issue before the constitutional reform that is directing the Government.

According to the Constitution Project, which is in the “popular consultation” phase, the definition of marriage changes as “the union between two persons with legal capacity to do so”. The current Law of Laws, in force since 1976, exposes this concept as “the union between a man and a woman”. If the new definition is approved, the authorities could proclaim a law that favors this type of unions, one of the main demands of the LGBTI community on the island, where in the 1960s the homosexuals were harshly persecuted under the umbrella of Fidel Castro.

“I do not impose or dictate anything, I only promote rights from reflection and analysis, from my social responsibility as director of a scientific institution that among its functions is to promote the sexual rights of all people,” Castro Espin wrote in his account in the social network Twitter. “The Cuban government has demonstrated its political will to advance its human rights agenda, but obscurantism, fanaticism and dogmatism seek to impose and dictate old rules.

The deputy, who made no direct reference to the origin of such positions, also said that she trusts “in the wisdom of the Cuban people”, with whose “direct voice the constitutional and continuous process is being enriched, numerous scientific studies that give an account of the evolution of families in history and how this social institution, like that of marriage, has been subjected to social control in the power games of the ruling classes. The concept of family that they call traditional or natural was not assumed peacefully, it was imposed with blood, torture, persecution, genocides of entire peoples who were stigmatized as heretics and many women condemned by “witches” said.

The Catholic Church as well as a score of Christian congregations have spoken out against this constitutional change and some of them are promoting campaigns in favor of what they consider the “original design” of the family.

The LGTBI community has been hopeful about the possibility of redefining the concept of marriage and has “counterattacked” the positions of Cuban religious denominations with a campaign that defends “a very original family design”.

La directora del estatal Centro Nacional de Educación Sexual (CENESEX), Mariela Castro Espín, hija de Raúl Castro, rompió el silencio en torno a la polémica del matrimonio igualitario y dijo este viernes que ella no dicta “nada”, en referencia al “debate” que ha suscitado el tema ante la reforma constitucional que está dirigiendo el Gobierno.

De acuerdo al Proyecto de Constitución, que se encuentra en fase de “consulta popular”, cambia la definición del matrimonio como “la unión entre dos personas con capacidad legal para ello”. La actual Ley de leyes, vigente desde 1976, expone este concepto como “la unión entre un hombre y una mujer”. De aprobarse la nueva definición, las autoridades podrían proclamar una ley que favorezca este tipo de uniones, una de las principales demandas de la comunidad LGBTI de la Isla, donde en la década de 1960 se perseguía con dureza a los homosexuales bajo el paraguas de Fidel Castro.

“No impongo ni dicto nada, solo promuevo derechos desde la reflexión y el análisis, desde mi responsabilidad social como directora de una institución científica que entre sus funciones tiene la de promover los derechos sexuales de todas las personas”, escribió Castro Espín en su cuenta en la red social Twitter. “El gobierno cubano ha demostrado su voluntad política de avanzar en su agenda de derechos humanos pero el oscurantismo, fanatismo y dogmatismo pretende imponer y dictar viejas reglas.

La diputada, que no hizo alusión directa al origen de tales posiciones, también manifestó que confía “en la sabiduría del pueblo cubano”, con cuya “voz directa se está enriqueciendo el proceso constitucional y continuo “numerosos estudios científicos que dan cuenta de la evolución de las familias en la historia y sobre cómo esta institución social, al igual que la del matrimonio, ha sido sometida al control social en los juegos de poder de las clases dominantes. El concepto de familia que llaman tradicional o natural no fue asumido pacíficamente, fue impuesto con sangre, tortura, persecución, genocidios de pueblos enteros que fueron estigmatizados como herejes y muchas mujeres condenadas por “brujas”.

La Iglesia Católica así como una veintena de congregaciones cristianas se han pronunciado en contra de este cambio constitucional y algunas de ellas están promoviendo campañas en favor de lo que consideran el “diseño original” de la familia.

La comunidad LGTBI se ha mostrado esperanzada ante la posibilidad de redefinir el concepto de matrimonio y ha “contraatacado” a las posiciones de las denominaciones religiosas cubanas con una campaña que defiende “un diseño de familia muy original”.
