Since the middle of the year it is known that the eastern town of El Cobre, in Santiago de Cuba, will have two new hotels to accommodate domestic and foreign tourists every day visiting the popular sanctuary of the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, Patron of the Island.

One of the hotel facilities will have the name “El Cobre”, while the other will be called “Los peregrinos”, as reported by local media. Both are in the process of construction and will be managed by the state chain Cubanacán.

For the construction of the first hotel, an existing building has been used in the emblematic town of the same name, about 22 kilometers northwest of the capital of Santiago. This will have 74 rooms, gastronomic services and other offers.

“El Cobre”, a small town where some 10,000 people live, receives annually thousands of pilgrims from other provinces and abroad who seek to visit the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Charity, declared a National Monument in 2012.

The pontiffs John Paul II, who crowned the Patroness in 1998, and Benedict XVI and Francisco during their visits in 2012 and 2015, respectively, have visited the Basilica in the last two decades.

As announced by official media a few months ago, the Ministry of Tourism of Cuba plans to build close to 17 new hotels with more than 100,000 rooms in Santiago, the second largest city on the island, in an agenda that closes in 2030.

Desde mediados de año se conoce que la oriental localidad de El Cobre, en Santiago de Cuba, contará con dos nuevos hoteles para alojar a los turistas nacionales y extranjeros diariamente que visitan el popular santuario a la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, Patrona de la Isla.

Una de las instalaciones hoteleras tendrá por nombre “El Cobre”, mientras que la otra será llamada “Los peregrinos”, según reseñan medios locales. Ambas se encuentran en pleno proceso constructivo y serán gestionadas por la cadena estatal Cubanacán.

Para la edificación del primer hotel se ha aprovechado un edificio ya existente en el emblemático pueblo homónimo, a unos 22 kilómetros al noroeste de la capital santiaguera. Este dispondrá de 74 habitaciones, servicios gastronómicos y otras ofertas.

“El Cobre”, un pequeño pueblo donde viven unas 10.000 personas, recibe anualmente a miles de peregrinos de otras provincias y del extranjero que buscan visitar el Santuario de la Virgen de la Caridad, declarado Monumento Nacional en 2012.

En las últimas dos décadas han visitado la Basílica los pontífices Juan Pablo II, que coronó a la Patrona en 1998, y Benedicto XVI y Francisco durante sus visitas en 2012 y 2015, respectivamente.

Según anunciaron medios oficiales hace unos meses, el Ministerio del Turismo de Cuba prevé levantar cerca de 17 nuevos hoteles con más de 100.000 habitaciones en Santiago, la segunda urbe más importante de la Isla, en una agenda que cierra en el año 2030.
