HISTORIA DE FRASES CONOCIDAS: “EN TIEMPO DE MARICASTAÑA” Y “HAY MOROS EN LA COSTA”.
Muchas son las frases que nos legaron nuestros antepasados llegados de España. Así, los hispanoparlantes empleamos en el habla coloquial expresiones que nos han acompañado a lo largo de los siglos. Es el caso de ‘En tiempos de Maricastaña’ y ‘Hay moros en la costa’.
Esta frase se toma para referirnos a un tiempo muy antiguo y está relacionada con una tal Maricastaña, quien en el siglo XIV estuvo junto a su esposo y dos hermanos de este, al frente del Partido Popular de Lugo, en Galicia, donde resistían el pago de los tributos que el obispo, como gran señor, imponía, resistencia en la que no escasearon excesos, abusos y violencia.
La fama de esta mujer tan valiente se extendió por toda la comarca, esparciéndose por toda España y ya convertida en leyenda, acompañó a los emigrantes españoles que se establecieron en tierras de nuestra América.
Hay moros en la costa nos advierte de la precaución que se debe tener por la presencia próxima, inmediata, de alguien ante quien conviene callar o disimular palabras o acciones.
Esta cautelosa expresión tuvo su origen en tiempos que las costas de España eran atacadas por invasiones de berberiscos y asaltantes de otras nacionalidades.
Para responder a estos constantes ataques se organizaron compañías de jinetes, llamados guardas de las costas. Al grito de alerta de ¡Moros en la costa!, la población y los guardas conocían de la proximidad del peligro y actuaban en consecuencia.

This phrase is taken to refer to a very old time and is related to a certain Maricastaña, who in the fourteenth century was with her husband and two brothers of this, at the head of the Popular Party of Lugo, in Galicia, where they resisted payment of the tributes that the bishop, as great lord, imposed, resistance in which there was no shortage of excesses, abuses and violence.
The fame of this brave woman spread throughout the region, spreading throughout Spain and already become a legend, accompanied the Spanish emigrants who settled in the lands of our America.
“THERE AREN’T MOROS ON THE COAST”.
There are Moors on the coast warns us of the caution that must be taken by the immediate, immediate presence of someone before whom it is convenient to silence or disguise words or actions.
This cautious expression had its origin in times that the coasts of Spain were attacked by invasions of Berbers and assailants of other nationalities.
