(OPINION) FRANCE SELLS SUGAR TO CUBA.
If years ago you would have asked a Cuban if he thought that he would ever lack sugar for coffee and that he would have to buy it no less than in France, at once he would not hesitate to certify that the questioner was crazy.
Well, this has happened in an act of national shame: before the inability to supply the local market, the authorities have had to buy it from the French to be able to supply the delivery by basic basket for two months at a rate of about two kilos per person.
The sugar, which until now no vending machine can guarantee whether it is sugar beet or cane, has attracted the attention of consumers because of its color as white as it is neat. This, in moments when President Miguel Díaz-Canel has just met in New York with important American agricultural executives interested in negotiating with the island and warn them that “eleven million people (approximate population of Cuba) is not a market to be squandered ”
For a long time, the island must still import about 2,000 million dollars a year in food. Si años atrás se le hubiera preguntado a un cubano si pensaba que alguna vez le faltaría azúcar para el café y que debía adquirirla nada menos que en Francia, al instante no dudaría en certificar que el preguntón estaba loco de remate.
Pues así ha ocurrido en un acto de vergüenza nacional: ante la incapacidad de surtir el mercado local, las autoridades han debido comprarla a los franceses para poder suplir la entrega por canasta básica desde hace dos meses a razón de unos dos kilos por persona.
El azúcar, que hasta ahora ningún expendedor puede asegurar si se trata de remolacha o caña, ha llamado la atención de los consumidores por el color tan blanco como pulcro. Esto, en instantes en que el presidente Miguel Díaz-Canel se acaba de reunir en Nueva York con importantes ejecutivos agrícolas estadounidenses interesados en negociar con la isla y advertirles que “once millones de personas (población aproximada de Cuba) no es un mercado a desaprovechar”.
Desde hace largo tiempo, todavía la isla debe importar unos 2.000 millones de dólares anuales en alimentos. Después de esto del azúcar francés, cabe preguntarse si al margen de los efectos tan dañinos del cambio climático, entre otras razones, tendremos en el futuro cercano que comprarle el ron a los chinos y tabaco a los turcos.
