Entre muchos de los personajes conocidos de la vieja Habana hacia 1926 surgió uno que llamó durante algún tiempo la atención de las viejas calles de nuestra capital. Con su melena arbitraria, su sombrero pequeñísimo, su bastón, su andar rápido y su capa española, era una nota pintoresca en el extremo del Prado. Se llamaba Jesús Rodríguez Salgueiro y a bordo del vapor Órbita embarcó rumbo a Galicia, su región natal, un día de abril de 1928.

Se decía el último descendiente de Cristóbal Colón e inventor de instrumentos tan raros como un submarino aéreo y un dirigible invisible e invulnerable. Jamás pidió un centavo. Aceptaba solo invitaciones de sus amigos y paseos en automóvil. Vivía de la caridad de algunos compatriotas que discretamente, sin humillarle, le mantenían y que finalmente lo embarcaron para Galicia, donde sus familiares lo recluyeron en un manicomio.

Pero fue difícil convencer a Salgueiro de que hiciera el viaje de retorno; no quería dejar La Habana. Hubo que decirle que el Rey, su amigo y pariente, según él, lo reclamaba. El cónsul español lo convocó y de manera formal comunicó a don Jesús Rodríguez Salgueiro, legítimo y único Duque de Veragua, que Su Majestad Alfonso XIII lo necesitaba para confiarle el Virreinato de Riff.

—Si es una cuestión de Estado, embarcaré cuanto antes —dijo Salgueiro a sus amigos, que no sabían si reír o llorar—. Dejaré a Cuba, como recuerdo y prueba de gratitud, mi submarino aéreo. Dejo también amigos y enemigos…

Ese fue el recuerdo habanero de este personajes que hizo el hazme reír de los cubanos de entonces aunque también muchos lo consideraron en su condición de enfermo mental como otros muchos que han recorrido las calles de nuestras ciudades.

CHARACTERS OF THE OLD HAVANA: “EL GALLEGO SALGUEIRO”

Among many of the well-known figures of old Havana around 1926, one emerged who called for some time the attention of the old streets of our capital. With his arbitrary mane, his tiny hat, his cane, his fast walk and his Spanish coat, it was a picturesque note at the end of the Prado. His name was Jesús Rodríguez Salgueiro and aboard the Órbita steamer he sailed for Galicia, his native region, one day in April 1928.

But it was difficult to convince Salgueiro to make the return trip; I did not want to leave Havana. He had to be told that the King, his friend and relative, according to him, demanded it. The Spanish consul summoned him and formally communicated to Jesús Rodríguez Salgueiro, legitimate and only Duke of Veragua, that His Majesty Alfonso XIII needed him to entrust him with the Viceroyalty of Riff.

That was the habanero memory of this personage that made me laugh at the Cubans of that time, although many also considered him as a mental patient as many others who have walked the streets of our cities.
