DIED IN HAVANA “GALLEGO” FERNÁNDEZ.
José Ramón Fernández Álvarez, (Santiago de Cuba, November 4, 1923 – Havana, January 6, 2019) was a general and hero of the Republic of Cuba, popularly known on the island as “Gallego Fernández” and one of the historical leaders of the most long-lived Revolution. He was vice president of the Council of Ministers from 1978 to 2012.2 deputy of the National Assembly of Cuba since 1976 and member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba until his death at age 95.3
He was born in Santiago de Cuba in 1923; his parents were Asturian immigrants. That they lived in Santiago at their house near the “Charco Mono” dam a water deposit to supply Santiago de Cuba.
In 1947 he graduated from the Cuban Cadet School and also from the Artillery School, in addition to other courses in the United States and Cuba.
After the coup d’etat of March 10, 1952, he participated in various activities and conspiratorial movements against the Batista tyranny, until in 1956 he was arrested when the movement known as “Los Puros” was discovered and tried in a Sumarísimo War Council. He was sentenced to prison, where he remained until the triumph of the Cuban Revolution on January 1, 1959.
He was promoted to captain in 1959, to commander in 1961 and to brigadier general in the reserve in 1996.
As a member of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, he commanded one of the main groups of troops in the struggle against the Bay of Pigs landing.
After the triumph in 1959 of the Revolution led by Fidel Castro, “Gallego” Fernández occupied numerous positions of responsibility in the Cuban leadership.
He was deputy to the National Assembly of People’s Power from 1976 until his death in 2019. He had renewed his deputy act in the elections held in 2018. He was also a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba.
He assumed the vice presidency of the Council of Ministers of Cuba from 1978 to 2012, at which time he was appointed Adviser to the President of the Councils of State and Ministers. He was succeeded by Vice President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.
At the time of his death he was general of division in the reserve, and member of the Cuban Olympic Committee.
He died in Havana on January 6, 2019. In compliance with the last will of Gallego Fernández, his remains will be cremated. The Granma newspaper still does not know how its funeral honors will be organized.

José Ramón Fernández Álvarez, (Santiago de Cuba, 4 de noviembre de 1923 – La Habana, 6 de enero de 2019) fue un general y héroe de la República de Cuba, conocido popularmente en la isla como “Gallego Fernández” y uno de los dirigentes históricos de la Revolución más longevos. Fue vicepresidente del Consejo de Ministros desde 1978 hasta 2012,2 diputado de la Asamblea Nacional de Cuba desde 1976 y miembro del Comité Central del Partido Comunista de Cuba hasta su muerte a los 95 años.3
Nació en Santiago de Cuba en 1923; sus padres eran inmigrantes asturianos. Que vivieron en Santiago en su casa cerca de la represa de “Charco Mono” un depósito de agua para abastecer a Santiago de Cuba.
En 1947 se graduó en la Escuela de Cadetes de Cuba y también en la Escuela de Artillería, además de otros cursos en Estados Unidos y en Cuba.
A partir del golpe de estado del 10 de marzo de 1952 participó en diversas actividades y movimientos conspirativos contra la tiranía batistiana, hasta que en 1956 fue detenido al ser descubierto el movimiento conocido como “Los puros” y juzgado en un Consejo de Guerra Sumarísimo. Fue condenado a prisión, donde permaneció hasta el triunfo de la Revolución Cubana el 1 de enero de 1959.
Fue ascendido a capitán en 1959, a comandante en 1961 y a general de brigada en la reserva en 1996.
Como miembro de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias comandó una de las agrupaciones principales de tropas en la lucha contra el desembarco de Playa Girón.
Tras el triunfo en 1959 de la Revolución liderada por Fidel Castro, “Gallego” Fernández ocupó numerosos puestos de responsabilidad en la cúpula cubana.
Fue diputado a la Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular desde 1976 hasta su muerte en 2019. Había renovado su acta de diputado en las elecciones celebradas en 2018. Fue también integrante del Comité Central del Partido Comunista de Cuba.
Asumió la vicepresidencia del Consejo de Ministros de Cuba desde 1978 hasta 2012, momento en el que fue designado Asesor del Presidente de los Consejos de Estado y de Ministros. Le sucedió en el cargo de vicepresidente Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.
En el momento de su muerte era general de división en la reserva, y miembro del Comité Olímpico Cubano.
Murió en La Habana el 6 de enero de 2019. En cumplimiento de la última voluntad del Gallego Fernández, sus restos serán cremados. El diario Granma aún no sabe cómo se organizarán sus honras fúnebres.
