En medio de la crítica situación habitacional del país, donde se registra un déficit cercano al millón de viviendas, desde hace poco más de un mes se ha emprendido en La Habana una faraónica obra de remodelación en un inmueble de El Vedado que durante años perteneció al Ministerio del Interior y cuyo destino es una incógnita.
La manzana comprendida entre la avenida Paseo y la calle A y delimitadas por las calles 11 y 13 ha sido vallada. En el jardín de la casona han talado árboles y levantado unos gigantescos andamios. Un ejército de albañiles, plomeros y electricistas acometen la total remodelación del inmueble mientras en el exterior brigadas de la empresa eléctrica dejan soterrada las instalaciones de las luminarias que rodearan la instalación.
Las calles y las aceras han sido convertidas en enormes zanjas donde la empresa telefónica y las suministradoras de gas y agua parecen haberse puesto de acuerdo para dejarlo todo listo en tiempo récord. Cerca de la obra, el parqueo de equipos exhibe todo tipo de maquinarias, esas que ahora mismo faltan en la construcción de edificios de viviendas y en la reparación de las calles.
En varios lugares de la cerca perimetral hay advertencias que restringen el paso y prohíben hacer fotografías.
Cuando se pregunta a los trabajadores cuál será el fin de tanto esfuerzo se encogen de hombros y ponen cara de “no lo puedo decir”. ¿Es cierto que aquí se construye un hotel de cinco estrellas? El hombre mira por encima de su hombro antes de murmurar: “No, he oído que van a poner un museo dedicado a honrar la memoria de Fidel Castro” y con la voz ya casi inaudible, agrega: “La falta que hace…”.
