En el año 1914, allá por la loma de Cerro Calvo, le nació a la urbe un singular personaje, que sería símbolo y tradición, recordado incluso después de su muerte e inmortalizado en una de sus calles.

Asi Antaño, a los nacidos en la central ciudad cubana de Santa Clara y bautizados en la pila de la iglesia del Carmen se les nombraba pilongos, gentilicio que todavía hoy algunos recuerdan con orgullo.

De nombre Perico, dicho protagonista era un burro perteneciente a Bienvenido Pérez cuyo primer destino fue el de tirar un carretón de helados, luego otro con objetos de ferretería y finalmente de uno que recolectaba botellas.

Dicen algunos que el animal visitaba por sí mismo y una vez al año su lugar de nacimiento, corrales en los que ya para esa época existía, pudiera decirse el mejor criadero de asnos de la región.

Cuentan que fue cuando Bienvenido Pérez prosperó en los negocios, adquirió un vehículo y premió a Perico con la jubilación, que conllevó al comienzo de las más conocidas peripecias del burrito, que llegaría a ganarse el cariño de todos los santaclareños.

Desde entonces fue costumbre su andar por las calles de Santa Clara para regresar a su casa ya entrada la noche; dicen que hasta los choferes detenían los autos para dejarlo pasar.

Así, la imagen del pollino se hizo parte del paisaje citadino y las muestras de afecto ganadas: un caramelo aquí, un trozo de pan en alguna casa, lo hicieron crearse recorridos habituales que después recordaba milagrosamente y hasta daba sus toques en las puertas amigas.

A la historia también pasaría Perico como miembro de manifestaciones contra el régimen de turno, aseguran que alguna vez hasta portó carteles de protestas políticas.

Cuando el año 1947 unas fiebres decidieron ponerle fin a su pintoresca vida, los habitantes de la ciudad erigieron una estatua en su memoria donde rezaba que era bueno e inteligente como un ser humano.

Los historiadores cuentan que el senador Fileno Cárdenas le concedió el título de pilongo y célebres diarios destacaban en sus titulares la muerte de Perico.
