Rafael Bergaza Zerguera, mas conocido en el mundo oartistico solo como Felo Bergaza, nació en la ciudad de Trinidad, en las Villas, actualmente provincia de Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, el 26 de agosto de 1917. La vivienda donde nació se encuentra en la calle del Carmen No. 43. Felo Bergaza, es una gloria de la música cubana de todos los tiempos.

A lo 6 años ya estudiaba violín y a los 10, acompañado por su padre, era ejecutante en una orquesta. Posteriormente estudió solfeo, teoría de la música y piano con María Arcís. En Trinidad, de donde salió a los 14 años, están todos sus recuerdos. Su historia artística está muy unida a su ciudad natal. Concluidos los mismos el teatro, la radio y la televisión, fueron medios donde comenzó a poner de manifiesto sus cualidades como ejecutante del instrumento de teclado.

Su consagración sobrevino cuando el maestro Ernesto Lecuona lo presentó en sus extraordinarios conciertos desde los famosos teatros habaneros Auditórium Amadeo Rodán, Encanto y América, haciendo dinámicos dúos de piano con Orlando de la Rosa y participando en grandes conjuntos en los que actuaban hasta doce ejecutantes a la vez, que incluían a los más virtuosos del instrumento de la época.

Para 1939 se ubicó definitivamente en La Habana y comenzó su etapa como pianista acompañante, trabajando con Rita Montaner en la emisora COCO, y con el tenor René Cabel.

Posteriormente fue director musical y pianista de la compañía de Bufos Cubanos, con la que realizó giras por República Dominicana y Haití. En 1940 viajó a Puerto Rico, contratado por un año en el cabaret Nilo; allí se presentó junto a la cantante Frances Langford y el actor cómico Bob Hope, ambos norteamericanos, además de hacer conciertos a dos pianos con Eddy Duchin.

Una etapa importante de su vida artística transcurrió entre 1951 y 1958 junto a otro pianista cubano de alcurnia, Juan Bruno Tarraza. En México el dúo Felo Bergaza-Juan Bruno Tarraza laboró en el teatro Blanquita, con las compañías de Tina de Mola y la soprano azteca Esperanza Iris; en el teatro Margó junto al famoso Trío Los Panchos y los cantantes María Victoria, Chucho Martínez Gil, Toni Gari, las orquestas de Pérez Prado e Ismael Días y el reconocido compositor Agustín Lara.

Las asiduas giras del dúo por muchos países de América hicieron disfrutar a sus partidarios de las actuaciones de la pareja. También llevaron su arte a países de otras zonas geográficas, como Francia, Italia, España, Medio Oriente y África del Norte.

Felo Bergaza dejó infinidad de composiciones musicales, entre las que sobresalen los títulos ”Por eso tienes la culpa’, ‘Extraño amor’, ‘me parece increíble’, y ‘De eso nada’.

Felo Bergaza falleció en la capital cubana el 7 de julio de 1969, hace ahora 50 años.
