El bolero típico cubano surgió alrededor de 1840. Se acepta que el primer bolero fue “Tristezas”, escrito por el cubano José Pepe Sánchez en Santiago de Cuba en 1883.​​​​ Esa pieza dio origen formal al género con el acompañamiento musical que denominamos «clásico» de guitarras y percusión.

Otro estándar en el repertorio de cualquier cantante de bolero es “Veinte Años”, originalmente compuesto por Maria Teresa Vera de Guanajay, Cuba. Vera fue un destacado guitarrista, cantante y compositor; Pasó 27 años actuando con Lorenzo Hierrezuelo en el dúo Los Compadres.
El Buena Vista Social Club le dio a la canción una amplia audiencia cuando la interpretó Omara Portuondo.

“Historia De Un Amor”

Compuesta por el panameño Carlos Almaran y escrita para conmemorar la muerte de la esposa del hermano de Almarán, la canción ha sido interpretada por numerosos artistas e incluso formó parte de una banda sonora de una película de 1956 con el mismo nombre.

Uno de los boleros más populares de todos los tiempos, “Solamente Una Vez” fue compuesto por Augustin Lara en 1941. El prolífico compositor mexicano de Veracruz escribió más de 800 composiciones que incluyen “María Bonita”, “Noche de Ronda” y el clásico perenne. “Granada”.
El bolero se grabó posteriormente en inglés como “You Belong To My Heart” y se hizo famoso por Bing Crosby y Xavier Cougat.

The typical Cuban bolero emerged around 1840. It is accepted that the first bolero was “Tristezas”, written by the Cuban José Pepe Sánchez in Santiago de Cuba in 1883. This piece gave formal origin to the genre with the musical accompaniment that we call “classical” guitars and percussion.
