Cuba y Google están firmando un acuerdo que mueve la isla un paso más cerca de tener una conexión de vanguardia a la Internet moderna.

El gigante estadounidense de internet y el gobierno cubano acordaron el jueves por la mañana en La Habana crear una conexión perfecta y gratuita entre sus dos redes una vez que Cuba pueda conectarse físicamente a un nuevo cable submarino de fibra óptica.

El llamado acuerdo de emparejamiento permitiría a los cubanos conectarse más rápido al contenido de los servidores de Google y reduciría el costo del gobierno cubano de conectar a los usuarios con el contenido de Google.

Los propietarios de redes como el monopolio cubano de telecomunicaciones, Etecsa, actualmente deben pagar las tarifas de los operadores de terceros por pasar el tráfico a sitios como YouTube, Google Maps y Google.com.

Cuba actualmente tiene una conexión de fibra óptica insuficiente que corre bajo el Caribe hacia Venezuela.

Cuba and Google are signing a deal moving the island one step closer to having a state-of-the-art connection to the modern internet.

The American internet giant and the Cuban government were set to agree Thursday morning in Havana to create a seamless, cost-free connection between their two networks once Cuba is able to physically connect to a new undersea fiber-optic cable.

The so-called peering deal would allow Cubans to connect faster to content on Google servers and would reduce the Cuban government’s cost of connecting users to Google content.

Network owners like the Cuban telecoms monopoly Etecsa currently must pay third-party operator fees for passing traffic along to sites such as Youtube, Google Maps and Google.com.

Cuba currently has an insufficient fiber-optic connection running under the Caribbean to Venezuela.
