Cuantas costumbres de la isla nos persiguen y de las cuales es difícil desprenderse, por mucho tiempo que uno lleve viviendo en el extranjero.

Tales costumbres fueron adquiridas en tiempos de escasez, en la Isla, y aunque ya no sea preciso recurrir a ellas, se instalaron con fuerza en nuestro inconsciente, y es difícil desprenderse de ellas. He aquí algunas de esas costumbres, que acompañan a buena parte de los cubanos dondequiera que vivan:

1. Sacudir el pomo de aceite, o el envase con puré de tomate, hasta la última gota, encima del sartén. Los casos graves ponen el pomo virado bocabajo, en un recipiente, para “exprimirlo” hasta el último atisbo.

2. Echarle ron, o whisky, o tequila, o cualquier bebida alcohólica, en el piso, en un rincón, al santo que la necesita.

3. Exprimir el tubo de pasta dental con una fuerza y una paciencia aniquiladoras. Los casos graves lo cortan con una tijera para introducir el cepillo, o una vez terminados los abren por atrás para retomar los resquicios.

4. Guardar jabas de nailon, envases plásticos, pomos “bonitos” o periódicos y revistas viejas porque el papel puede servir para algo.

5. Limpiar el pomo de mayonesa ya casi vacío con migajas de pan o de galletas que recuperen las estrías del aceite emulsionado. Es una variante de la obsesión con los oleaginosos que nos acompaña toda la vida.

6. Quejarse de que los plátanos maduros, los mameyes, los mangos y las guayabas no tienen el mismo sabor que en la Isla.

7. Enjuagar latas y pomos de cualquier producto para echar el enjuague en el sofrito, en los frijoles.

8. Raspar las cazuelas o jarros donde se hizo natilla, y el fondo de la lata de leche condensada en busca del poquito que se puso duro en el fondo.

9. Comparar todas las colas que uno ve, las pocas que se ven, con la de Coppelia, en los años setenta, ochenta, noventa…

10. Guardar pozuelos de helado, o cajitas plásticas diversas para refrigerar distintos pedacitos de utilizarás, o no, en algún momento.

11. Echar agua de la pila o de la ducha, en el pomo de champú para aprovechar el fondaje, y lavarte la cabeza con esa agua de enjuague de champú, que a lo mejor queda tan buena, o mejor, que el producto puro y original.

12. Y soñar con una fiesta donde vuelvan a darte cajitas de cartón donde el cake de merengue se ligue con la ensalada fría de coditos y mayonesa.

SOME OLD CUBAN CUSTOMS THAT STILL FOLLOW US OUT OF THE ISLAND.

How many customs of the island pursue us and from which it is difficult to get rid, no matter how long one has lived abroad.

Such customs were acquired in times of scarcity, on the Island, and although it is no longer necessary to resort to them, they settled with force in our unconscious, and it is difficult to get rid of them. Here are some of those customs that accompany a good part of Cubans wherever they live:

1. Shake the oil knob, or the container with tomato puree, until the last drop, on top of the pan. Serious cases put the knob turned upside down, in a container, to “squeeze” it until the last glimpse.

2. Put rum, or whiskey, or tequila, or any alcoholic beverage, on the floor, in a corner, to the saint who needs it.

3. Squeeze the tube of toothpaste with a force and a patience to annihilate. Severe cases cut with a scissors to insert the brush, or once finished open them back to resume the cracks.

4. Save nylon jars, plastic containers, “nice” knobs or newspapers and old magazines because paper can be useful.

5. Clean the almost empty mayonnaise knob with breadcrumbs or biscuits that recover the stretch marks of the emulsified oil. It is a variant of the obsession with oilseeds that accompanies us throughout life.

6. Complain that ripe bananas, mameyes, mangoes and guavas do not have the same flavor as on the Island.

7. Rinse cans and knobs of any product to rinse in the sofrito, in the beans.

8. Scrape the pots or jars where custard was made, and the bottom of the condensed milk can looking for the little bit that got hard in the bottom.

9. Compare all the tails that one sees, the few that are seen, with that of Coppelia, in the seventies, eighties, nineties …

10. Keep pozuelos of ice cream, or different plastic boxes to refrigerate different pieces of you will use, or not, at some time.

11. Pour water from the sink or shower, into the shampoo bottle to take advantage of the fondaje, and wash your head with that shampoo rinse water, which is maybe as good, or better, than the pure product and original.

12. And dream of a party where they give you back cardboard boxes where the meringue cake is linked with the cold salad of coditos and mayonnaise.
