El archipiélago por muchos como de las Antillas Mayores, con cerca de seis mil kilómetros de costas bañadas por las aguas del Caribe, al sur, y del Atlántico, al norte, lo forman la isla de Cuba -la mayor- la de la Juventud, y más de cuatro mil islotes y pequeños cayos, sinónimos del paraíso. Auténticas perlas en pleno mar, cuentan con hermosas playas vírgenes de poco oleaje y escasa profundidad, junto a arrecifes de coral.

Aqui le mencionamos algunos de los Cayos de la isla más bellos:

CAYO COCO

Situado en aguas del océano Atlántico -en la zona septentrional del país- en el archipiélago de Jardines del Rey, es uno de los más grandes y conocidos de Cuba. Una de las grandes sorpresas que depara Cayo Coco es la presencia de los flamencos rosados, una especie autóctona de la zonal sur, con una colonia que alcanza los 30.000 ejemplares.

CAYO GUILLERMO

Unido por un camino natural desde Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo cuenta con algunas de las playas más famosas de Cuba, como son las de El Paso o la de El Pilar, un idílico arenal, conocido con este nombre en honor al yate del periodista y escritor Ernest Hemingway, uno de los más célebres enamorados de la isla. Situado también en el archipiélago Jardines del Rey, es mucho menos concurrido que su vecino por lo que todavía conserva playas vírgenes.

CAYO SANTA MARIA

El más grande de los cayos cubanos que forman La Herradura, en la bahía de Buenavista, es una reserva natural de la biosfera, conocida con el sobrenombre de la Rosa Blanca. Cayo Santa María está situado, junto a los dos cayos anteriores, en el archipiélago Jardines del Rey y se accede a él a través de un pedraplén -una vía de piedras sobre el mar- de 48 kilómetros, además de algunas playas de ensueño, como las de Las Caletas, La Perla Blanca o Cañón.

CAYO LARGO DEL SUR

Cayo Largo del Sur -o Cayo Largo, a secas- es considerado por muchos como el más hermoso no sólo de Cuba, sino del Caribe. Situado en el archipiélago de Los Canarreos, en el extremo sur del país, en pleno mar Caribe, es un increíble paraíso virgen de aguas turquesas y arena blanca y fresca, que destaca por sus arrecifes coralinos y su diversidad de fauna marina, además de grandes áreas de manglares. Entre sus 27 kilómetros de playas, sobresalen las de Sirena y Paraíso, esta última reconocida en diversas ocasiones como una de las mejores del mundo. Existen alli el Centro de Rescate de Tortugas Marinas, destinado a su cuidado y protección de las mismas. Aquí es posible observar cómo son y cómo viven las crías de esta especie autóctona.

CAYO LEVISA

Llegamos al final de nuestro recorrido, al menos concurrido y conocido de nuestros cinco cayos. Su nombre: Cayo Levisa. Se encuentra en la costa norte, en el Golfo de México, en la provincia de Pinar del Río, y sólo se llega hasta él tomando un ferry en la localidad de Palma Rubia. Y es que se trata de un diminuto territorio que no supera los 2,5 km2 y por lo que podemos hablar de un rincón prácticamente intacto. Dotado de una exuberante vegetación que termina junto al mar en medio del hermoso paisaje de la playa de Punta Arena. Como dato curioso, tienen prohibida la visita de los habitantes de Cuba.

SOME OF THE BEAUTIFUL CAYOS OF “THE PEARL OF THE ANTILLES”, CUBA.

The archipelago by many as the Greater Antilles, with about six thousand kilometers of coastline bathed by the waters of the Caribbean, to the south, and the Atlantic, to the north, is formed by the island of Cuba, the largest of the Youth, and more than four thousand small islands and cays, synonyms of paradise. Authentic pearls in the middle of the sea, they have beautiful virgin beaches with little waves and little depth, next to coral reefs.

The great majority of the cays are not prepared to receive tourists but some of them have an occasional hotel.

We will refer to some of the best:

CAYO COCO

Located in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean – in the northern part of the country – in the archipelago of Jardines del Rey, it is one of the largest and best known in Cuba. It is equipped with hotel infrastructure – it even has its own airport. One of the great surprises awaiting Cayo Coco is the presence of the pink flamingos, a native species of the southern zone, with a colony that reaches 30,000 specimens.

CAYO GUILLERMO

United by a natural path from Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo has some of the most famous beaches in Cuba, such as those of El Paso or El Pilar, an idyllic stretch of sand, known by this name in honor of the yacht of the journalist and writer Ernest Hemingway, one of the most famous lovers of the island. Also located in the Jardines del Rey archipelago, it is much less crowded than its neighbor so it still preserves unspoiled beaches.

Located in the archipelago of Los Canarreos, in the extreme south of the country, in the Caribbean Sea, it is an incredible virgin paradise of turquoise waters and fresh white sand, which stands out for its coral reefs and its diversity of marine fauna, as well as large Mangrove areas. Among its 27 kilometers of beaches, stand out Sirena and Paradise, the latter recognized on several occasions as one of the best in the world. There is the Marine Turtle Rescue Center, dedicated to their care and protection. Here it is possible to observe how the offspring of this autochthonous species are and how they live.

CAYO LEVISA

We arrived at the end of our tour, at least busy and known from our five keys. His name: Cayo Levisa. It is located on the north coast, in the Gulf of Mexico, in the province of Pinar del Río, and you can only get there by taking a ferry in the town of Palma Rubia. And it is a tiny territory that does not exceed 2.5 km2 and so we can speak of a practically intact corner.
