La Vida tiene sus altas y bajas en cuanto a la supervivencia humana y en la persistencia por ser algo importante en ella. Esa es la historia de un cubano que por sus propios esfuerzos, calidad personal y profesional hizo esa transformacion.

Nacer en Santa Catalina, entre Lombillo y Piñera en la barriada habanera del Cerro y ser un negrito limpiabotas, vendedor de periódicos y lo que se presente y ser campeón mundial de boxeo no es fácil. Pero a golpes de persistencia y de los otros, lógicamente, lo logró Eligio Sardiñas Montalvo, conocido mundialmente como Kid Chocolate.

Al manager “Pincho” Gutiérrez, jamás le pasó por la mente que aquel “negrito” flaco, pudiera vencer a su prometedor discípulo Jhonny Cruz. Incorporado a la escuadra de “Pincho” Gutiérrez, Eligio Sardiñas viaja a los Estados Unidos y ahí se inicia una carrera de triunfos del boxeador que comenzó a ser conocido como Kid Chocolate.

El 29 de agosto de 1929 el Kid chocó guantes con el ídolo neoyorquino Al Singer, a quien venció por decisión en el Polo Graund. Los parciales de Singer no quedaron conforme con la decisión y se pactó una revancha en el propio estadio, donde Kid Chocolate demostró que tenía madera de campeón. Por su boxeo elegante, por no aprovecharse de la debilidad, o estado de indefinición del adversario, se le llamó con justicia: El Caballero del Ring.

Estamos en Estados Unidos, Kid es negro, además cubano, no norteamericano. Todo influye. Los demás podían aspirar a la faja de campeón, pero Kid Chocolate tuvo que ganar ¡52! combates consecutivos. Por fin llegó el ansiado momento: la discusión de la faja mundial. El encuentro fue con el campeón Benny Bass, el 15 de julio de 1931, el combate decepcionó a los parciales del norteamericano que reclamaron la revancha, la que se efectuó y en la que Bass, después de recibir una tremenda paliza no salió a combatir en el séptimo round.

Cuba ya tenía un campeón mundial de boxeo, Kid Chocolate con 21 años de edad. Más de 100 peleas en poco menos de cuatro años dejan huellas, incluso en un hombre a quien sus rivales apenas podían tocar. Llegó la hora del retiro del gran campeón. Trató de regresar en 1937, logrando ganar 24 peleas. Pero ya no era Kid Chocolate de siempre. Así, terminó la carrera de uno de los grandes de todos los tiempos.
