La aerolínea francesa de bajo costo XL Airways, que operaba en una variedad de destinos de ocio -entre ellos Cuba-, anunció el jueves, de forma repentina, el cese completo de sus operaciones, informó la revista Forbes.

A través de un comunicado, se explicó que la decisión es resultado de “dificultades financieras” y por tanto, los servicios serían interrumpidos a partir del 19 de septiembre. La venta de pasajes -ida y vuelta- y los vuelos programados se vieron afectados, por lo que la aerolínea solicitó a sus clientes comprobar el estado de sus viajes.

XL Airways era conocido por ofertar vuelos a destinos turísticos como: Nueva York, San Francisco, Punta Cana, Varadero y Cancún, a través de un modelo de bajo costo. La compañía cobraba lo mínimo por boletos y luego agregaba tarifas para la selección de asientos, comidas, equipaje y otros complementos. Sin embargo, con una flota de menos de media docena de A330, las ganancias resultaron ser insuficientes.

A la par, durante los últimos meses a competencia entre las aerolíneas se ha recrudecido y operadores más posicionados -Air France y Lufthansa- han comenzado a lanzar sus propios vuelos de “bajo costo”. Ello, también coincidió con el incremento del precio del petróleo que perjudicó a otras compañías, las cuales tuvieron que declararse en bancarrota.

Ahora, con el colapso de XL muchos pasajeros se han quedado varados en sus destinos. De acuerdo con la agencia de noticias Reuters, la aerolínea de bajo costo, incluso contactó con representantes de Air France para obtener una posible ayuda económica. No obstante, aún no existe evidencia de que esto se lleve a cabo.

“Nos disculpamos de antemano por cualquier inconveniente que esta situación pueda haber causado a nuestros valiosos clientes”, señaló la entidad en su declaración. “Nuestros equipos están totalmente comprometidos a trabajar plenamente para ofrecer a nuestros clientes nuestro servicio”.

El último vuelo de XL está programado para este lunes, el 23 de septiembre.

However, with a fleet of less than half a dozen A330, the earnings turned out to be insufficient.

At the same time, during the last months the competition between the airlines has increased and more positioned operators – Air France and Lufthansa – have started to launch their own “low cost” flights. This also coincided with the increase in the price of oil that harmed other companies, which had to declare bankruptcy.

Now, with the collapse of XL many passengers have been stranded at their destinations. According to the Reuters news agency, the low-cost airline even contacted representatives of Air France for possible financial help. However, there is still no evidence that this is done.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this situation may have caused to our valued customers,” the entity said in its statement. “Our teams are fully committed to working fully to offer our customers our service.”

The last XL flight is scheduled for Monday, September 23.
