En Cuba, al Sur de la Provincia de Matanzas se encuentra la Ciénaga de Zapata que constituye el mayor humedal de Cuba, considerado Reserva de la Biosfera por sus condiciones naturales. Allí se encuentra la Laguna del Tesoro, un lago de agua dulce con 16 kilómetros cuadrados de superficie y cinco kilómetros de diámetro.

Precisamente en aquel ecosistema conviven especies endémicas como el manatí (Trichechus manatous) y el manjuarí (Lepisosteus tristoechus), con los cuales los visitantes pueden interactuar como parte de los privilegios que ofrece aquel paraíso. Además, las truchas de boca grande (Micropterus salmoides) se reproducen con gran facilidad gracias a la vegetación acuática.

En la laguna con el tiempo se ha convertido en el llamado centro turístico Guamá que se considera una réplica de aldea taína esculpida por Rita Longa, como homenaje a la cultura indígena más avanzada que habitó el archipiélago. El conjunto está integrado por 25 esculturas a escala natural: cuatro bohíos en tierra y un caney. Además, muestra personajes aborígenes en sus faenas cotidianas: labores domésticas, pesca, caza… Así podemos apreciar a Dayamí, la joven soñadora; Abey, cazador de cocodrilos; Cajimo, cazador de jutías; Maguanay, madre de familia que prepara el casabe; Yaíma, la niña que juega; y el cacique Guamá, jefe de la comunidad.

LA LEYENDA DE LA LAGUNA DEL TESORO.

Precisamente, aquel estanque de agua dulce debe su nombre a una historia legendaria relacionada con este grupo de aborígenes.

De acuerdo con el libro Ciénaga de Zapata: el humedal de los tesoros, de Lázaro Estenoz Cosme, según una antigua leyenda, en el siglo XVI, cuando los conquistadores españoles se adentraron en aquella zona, los indios siboneyes de los cacicazgos de Yaguaramas y Hanábana concurrieron al enclave acuático y, atemorizados, lanzaron sus riquezas al agua para que no cayeran en manos de los conquistadores. Esto dio origen al nombre de Laguna del Tesoro.

Este lugar legendario, se encuentra a medio camino entre Jagüey Grande y Playa Larga. Para llegar a él debe viajar en barco desde Boca de Guamá a través de un canal adornado de una tupida vegetación. Sin dudas, La leyenda espera por todos los que puedan llegar hasta este regula de la naturaleza a Cuba.

THE TREASURE LAGOON AND THE CIENAGA DE ZAPATA, CUBA’S MAYOR HUMEDAL.

In Cuba, to the South of the Province of Matanzas is the Zapata Swamp, which constitutes the largest wetland in Cuba, considered a Biosphere Reserve due to its natural conditions. THE LEGEND OF THE TREASURE LAGOON.

According to the book Ciénaga de Zapata: the wetland of the treasures, by Lázaro Estenoz Cosme, according to an ancient legend, in the 16th century, when the Spanish conquerors entered that area, the Siboney Indians of the Yaguaramas and Hanábana chieftains they attended the aquatic enclave and, frightened, they threw their riches into the water so that they did not fall into the hands of the conquerors. This gave rise to the name of Laguna del Tesoro.
