El duo “Los Compadres” fue fundado en 1942 y es era uno de los grupos más representativos de la música cubana. Lorenzo Hierrezuelo, primera voz, y Francisco Repilado, segunda voz, fueron los primeros miembros de este dúo. Estos dos destacados músicos cubanos ya habían trabajado juntos en 1938 cuando se creó el cuarteto Hatuey, compuesto también por Marcelino Guerra (Rapindey) y Evelio Machín, y en ocasiones unieron sus voces para cumplir con varios compromisos.

Vale la pena mencionar que antes de la fundación de Los Compadres, Lorenzo Hierrezuelo fue miembro de uno de los dúos más populares de Cuba en ese momento, junto con María Teresa Vera.

De acuerdo con los especialistas y críticos, cuando se crearon “Los Comopadres” estos lograron la combinación perfecta de dos voces y dos guitarras que rara vez se encuentran en la historia de la música cubana.

Un comentarista de radio los bautizó con los nombres que los acompañarán a la inmortalidad: usó la palabra “Compay”, que es la forma coloquial de decir “compadre” y el saludo habitual utilizado en la región oriental de Cuba. Lorenzo Hierrezuelo, que era la primera voz, se convirtió en “Compay Primo” y Francisco Repilado, la segunda voz, se convirtió en “Compay Segundo”.

El dúo Los compadres primero fue notable por la fusión excelente de su voz y la manera alegre en la que han tratado los campesinos en la región oriental de Cuba. Tose día fue testigo de temas antológicos como “Macusa”, “Mi son oriental”, “Los barrios de Santiago” y “Yo canto en el llano”.

El dúo Repilado y Hierrezuelo dejó algunas grabaciones para el sello Panart y actuó en varios escenarios nacionales e internacionales durante los trece años que permanecieron juntos.

En 1955, Lorenzo Hierrezuelo regresó al formato de dúo con la incorporación de su hermano Reinaldo Hierrezuelo, conocido como el Rey Caney, fundador del Cuarteto Patria en 1939 y actualmente director de La quinteto Vieja Trova Santiaguera. También en 1955, Los Compadres se trasladó a Santiago de Cuba, viajó a Santo Domingo y ha logrado una popularidad única. En el Perú, fueron galardonados con dos discos de oro y coronado con el éxito en toda América Latina. Hicieron una gira por Cuba y la mayor parte de Europa y Japón.

Los hermanos Hierrezuelo recorrido medio mundo interpretando la música cubana en diferentes países mediante la interpretación de un hijo puro, el de Santiago de Cuba. De esta manera, establecieron un estilo caracterizado por sus voces únicas, su cadencia, su peculiar sentido del humor y el uso de los sonidos guturales de Lorenzo para reproducir el sonido de las claves y de Reinaldo, quien se convirtió en la “flauta humana”, ahora utilizado por muchos e importantes grupos de jóvenes voces en Cuba como, por ejemplo, el grupo de muestreo.

Las muchas canciones que se convirtieron en éxitos como “Venga guano”, “No hay llanto quiero” y “Guarapo, pimienta y sal”. El dúo estuvo activo hasta la Lorenzo.
