Benito Antonio Fernández Ortíz conocido por todos como Ñico Saquito fue compositor, guitarrista y cantante de guarachas famosas en la música popular cubana y de otros países.

Ñico, es el diminutivo utilizado para Antonio, y Saquito fue el apodo que se ganó por su gran habilidad de atrapar bolas como pelotero, carrera que abandonó para dedicarse a la música.

Muchas de las canciones creadas por él, que suman alrededor de 500, han permanecido en el repertorio de grandes intérpretes como Benny Moré, Compay Segundo, el Septeto Ignacio Piñeiro, Cheo Feliciano, Oscar D’ León, por sólo citar algunos de los que hicieron famosas sus guarachas.

En sus composiciones se combinan letras ingeniosas y picantes, sus canciones estaban basadas en historias de su experiencia personal y de las anécdotas de familiares y amigos, especialmente contadas durante los velatorios, que dice, eran su mayor fuente de inspiración por la cantidad de cosas que en ellos se narraban.

ÑICO SAQUITO Y MARIA CRISTINA.

Entre las más famosas tenemos “Al vaivén de mi carreta”, una balada sentimental de la vida en el campo y de las miserias de la vida campesina, así como “Cuidadito, compay gallo” y “María Cristina me quiere gobernar”

Esta última, la más conocida, donde el autor hace un retrato de la mujer cubana, enérgica y mandona, tiene su origen en un personaje real.

Cuando Ñico viajó a San Luis, cerca de su natal Santiago de Cuba, para trabajar como aprendiz de mecánico de fundición, durante su estancia paró en casa de su tío Manuel Fernández. Allí conoció a la enérgica esposa de Manuel, llamada María Fernández García.

María Fernández vendía comida en la calle, en un tren de cantina, y a veces salía con un revólver pequeño, por si algún fresco se metía con ella, a esa mujer de carácter fuerte, había que respetarla.

Ñico Saquito compuso esa canción un día en el que María le peleaba al esposo porque no quería bañarse.

…“María Cristina me quiere gobernar y yo le sigo, le sigo la corriente, porque no quiero que diga la gente que María Cristina me quiere gobernar…Que vamos pa` la playa, allá voy, Que móntate en el carro, y me monto, Que bájate del carro, y me bajo, Que súbete en el puente, y me subo, Que quítate la ropa, me la quito, Que tírate en el agua, ¿En el agua? ¡No , no, no, no, María Cristina , que no, que no, que no, que no! Maria Cristina me quiere gobernar….”

Benito Antonio Fernández Ortíz known to all as Ñico Saquito was a composer, guitarist, and singer of famous guarachas in Cuban popular music and other countries.

Ñico, is the diminutive used for Antonio, and Saquito was the nickname he earned for his great ability to catch balls as a baseball player, a career he abandoned to devote himself to music.

In his compositions, witty and spicy lyrics are combined, his songs were based on stories of his personal experience and the anecdotes of family and friends, especially told during the wake-up calls, which he says, were his greatest source of inspiration for the amount of things that they were narrated in them.

ÑICO SAQUITO AND MARIA CRISTINA.

Among the most famous we have “Al vaivén de mi carreta”, a sentimental ballad of country life and the miseries of rural life, as well as “Cuidadito, compay gallo” and “María Cristina wants to govern me”

The latter, the best known, where the author makes a portrait of the Cuban woman, energetic and bossy, has its origin in a real character.

When Ñico traveled to San Luis, near his native Santiago de Cuba, to work as an apprentice as a foundry mechanic, during his stay he stopped at his uncle Manuel Fernández’s house. There he met Manuel’s energetic wife, named María Fernández García.

María Fernández was selling food on the street, in a canteen train, and sometimes she went out with a small revolver, in case some fresco got in with her, to that woman of a strong character, she had to be respected.

Ñico Saquito composed that song one day in which Maria fought her husband because she didn’t want to bathe.
