Miles de feligreses catolicos acuden cada ocho de septiembre al encuentro cubano religioso con la Imagen de la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre, Patrona de Cuba, en un sitio insigne de la ciudad de Pinar del Río, la catedral de San Rosendo.

Creada en 1688 bajo la protección de San Rosendo- noble galaico canonizado por la Iglesia Católica, abad y fundador de varios monasterios-, la parroquia fue establecida el 20 de febrero de 1903 por el papa León XIII.

Desde entonces, ha sido testigo de diversos acontecimientos en su ciudad, especialmente por su céntrica ubicación en la calle Antonio Maceo, de Vueltabajo.

De acuerdo con fuentes bibliográficas, se trata de un templo ecléctico de tres naves. Con mayor proximidad al estilo neoclásico, exhibe no obstante elementos distintivos del barroco.

En su fachada, las imágenes de San Pedro y San Pablo, confeccionadas en piedra y procedentes de España; mientras su amplio jardín cuenta con una del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús.

El altar mayor posee las imágenes de San Rosendo al centro, la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre a la izquierda; y San José, a la derecha.

“Buscar la gloria de Dios en todo, santificando nuestras acciones, tendidos hacia el amor al prójimo”, frase del padre, filósofo, político, maestro y escritor cubano Félix Varela que en el jardín lateral de la Catedral acompaña una escultura en recordación de su legado, pues defendió a ultranza el derecho a la autonomía de los territorios americanos, propuso la modernización de la enseñanza en la Isla y la abolición de la esclavitud.

La diócesis abarca a la provincia de Pinar del Río y a la mitad occidental de Artemisa, o sea, los municipios de San Cristóbal, Bahía Honda, Candelaria, Artemisa, Guanajay y Mariel.

Para creyentes y no creyentes el lugar no pasa desapercibido. En el ir y venir rutinario de los pobladores de la urbe, se detienen las prisas en su cercanía; incluso los infantes se sienten atraídos por su belleza arquitectónica.

THE CATHEDRAL OF SAN ROSENDO IN PINAR DEL RIO, AN ARCHITECTURAL BEAUTY OF CUBA.

Thousands of Catholic parishioners come every September 8 to the Cuban religious encounter with the Image of the Virgin of Charity of Copper, Patroness of Cuba, in an important place in the city of Pinar del Río, the cathedral of San Rosendo.

Created in 1688 under the protection of San Rosendo – a noble Galaic canonized by the Catholic Church, abbot, and founder of several monasteries -, the parish was established on February 20, 1903, by Pope Leo XIII.

Since then, he has witnessed various events in his city, especially for its central location on Antonio Maceo Street, in Vueltabajo.

According to bibliographic sources, it is an eclectic temple with three naves. With greater proximity to the neoclassical style, it nevertheless exhibits distinctive elements of the Baroque.

On its facade, the images of San Pedro and San Pablo, made of stone and from Spain; while its large garden has one of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The main altar has the images of San Rosendo in the center, the Virgin of Charity of Copper on the left; and San José, on the right.

“Seek the glory of God in everything, sanctifying our actions, tending towards love for our neighbor”, a phrase from the father, philosopher, politician, teacher and Cuban writer Félix Varela who accompanies a sculpture in the side garden of the Cathedral in remembrance of his legacy, because he defended at all costs the right to autonomy of the American territories, proposed the modernization of education on the Island and the abolition of slavery.

The diocese covers the province of Pinar del Río and the western half of Artemis, that is, the municipalities of San Cristóbal, Bahía Honda, Candelaria, Artemisa, Guanajay, and Mariel.

For believers and non-believers, the place does not go unnoticed. In the routine comings and goings of the inhabitants of the city, the rush stops nearby; Even infants are attracted to its architectural beauty.
