René José de Jesús Cabezas Rodríguez, más conocido artisticamente solo como René Cabel fue un popular cantante cubano considerado como uno de los más grandes bolerista de todos los tiempos. Se destacó principalmente en Cuba y Colombia.
Nació el 9 de marzo de 1914 en Alquizar, en la actual provincia de Artemisa, de niño la familia se traslada a La Habana, donde empezó a destacarse al canto, estudiando con el tenor dramático italiano Arturo Gobbi, quien se había quedado en Cuba, después de dejar la dirección de los coros que acompañaron a Enrico Caruso en la visita de este en 1919.
Después de dos o tres intentos con la ópera se concentró en los boleros y las canciones, siendo Ernesto Lecuona unos de los descubridores, triunfando junto a él en el Teatro Nacional al quedar incorporado en el elenco por la interpretación de Yo quiero que tú sepas.

En 1933 se inicia en Radio Salas y en CMBD, siendo desde ese momento uno de los artistas más solicitados de la radio, teniendo además el acompñamiento al pìano de René Touzet, Juan Bruno Tarraza, Julio Gutiérrez y Orlando de la Rosa.
Entre las orquestas que la acompañaron fueron la Orquesta de los Hermanos Castro, los Orquesta Hermanos Palau, Orquesta Casino de la Playa, la de Alberto Brito y la que dirigía Enrique González Mántici.
Hace grabaciones con La Habana Casino, La Riverside y fue el cantante principal de la orquesta de Julio Gutiérrez.

En 1937 visita México, donde grabó para discos Peerless. En ese país impresionó a Rafael Hernández, quien después vino a grabarle a Cuba 40 registros, casi todas composiciones del maestro boricua y de las cuales alcanzaron resonancia: ‘Despecho’ (Odiame), ‘Lejos de ti’ y ‘Pobre gitana’.
Se presentó también en Colombia, Brasil, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela y Puerto Rico, donde alternó con el gran cantante nacional Carlos Julio Ramírez.
En Colombia es invitado por la cadena Kresto, actuó en las principales ciudades del país, en Medellín convenció a Willian Gil para que contratara a Benny Moré en 1955 en vez de la Sonora Matancera, que era el plan inicial del empresario de la Voz de Antioquia.
Realizó grabaciones en la NBC, en Cuba le otorgaron un programa de televisión Cita con René Cabell, por el cual pasaron entre otros: Cantinflas, Arturo de Córdoba, María Félix, Pedro Vargas y Agustín Lara.
Fue responsable artistico del cabaret Karachi, donde se daban cita entre otros Bola de Nieve, Elena Burke e iniciaba en el piano Frank Fernández.
Radicado en Colombia a partir de 1964, cantaba ocasionalmente, fue empresario artístico y comercializador internacional de café colombiano, también regresó en ocasiones a Cuba a contratar artistas del Cabaret Tropicana, Tata Güines, Bobby Carcassés, entre otros.
También descubre a la cantante colombiana Haydeé Barros, a la que contrata y se convierte en el manager.
Participó en 1941 en la película ‘Romance musical’ con la dirección Ernesto Caparrós, donde además actuaban Rita Montaner y Otto Sirgo, en 1942 hace el documental Ritmos de Cuba, donde interpreta La canción del guajiro, también con dirección de Ernesto Caparrós y las actuaciones de Orlando Guerra, Estelita Rodríguez y Orquesta Casino de la Playa, la comparsa Las Sultanas y el Trío Cubano.
En el 2005 en Estados Unidos se le ralizó un documental de 50 minutos de duración, nombrado René Cabel, ‘El tenor de las Antillas’, dirigido por Oscar Emilio Alcalde Sánchez, donde testimonian entre otros, Olga Guillot, René Touzet y Roberto Ledesma.
Entre las canciones que interpretó, destacan, ‘El Reloj’, ‘Tu me olvidas’, ‘Tú me acostumbraste’, ‘Palabra de mujer’, ‘Despecho’, ‘Amigo’, ‘Irremediablemente solo’, ‘Cada vez más’, ‘Que será, sera’, ‘Que injusticia’, ‘Una mujer’, ‘Dicen que soy borracho’, ‘Mi eterna canción’, ‘Volveré’, ‘Vals de los quince’.
También se citan, ‘Siete noches’, ‘Vagabundo’, ‘Una mujer’, ‘Franqueza’, ‘Nunca, Nunca, Nunca’; ‘El Amor algo divino’, ‘Santa’, ‘Mujer’, ‘Peregrina’, ‘La Barca’ y ‘Cuentame tus penas de amor’. Rene Cabel estuvo casado con la tambien actriz cubana Minin Bujones.
Fallece a la edad de 84 años en Bogotá, Colombia, producto a un prolongado proceso diabético el 3 de abril de 1998.
