Isabela de Sagua, también abreviada como Isabela y apodada La Venecia de Cuba (“La Venecia cubana”), es una aldea cubana del municipio de Sagua la Grande, en la actual provincia de Villa Clara. En 2011 tenía una población de 3.187.

Ubicada en una península, al oeste de la desembocadura del río Sagua la Grande y junto a una laguna, Isabela se encuentra junto a la costa atlántica, frente al archipiélago Jardines del Rey. Está rodeado por un pantano que se extiende alrededor de la península. Está a 11 km de Nueva Isabela, 17 de Sagua, 27 de los Mogotes de Jumagua, 36 de Cifuentes y 66 de Santa Clara.

Isabela de Sagua tiene un puerto en la costa noroeste y un puerto deportivo en el suroeste. Su estación de ferrocarril es el término norte de la línea Santa Clara-Sagua-Isabela y tiene algunas pistas que sirven al puerto. Una carretera provincial une el pueblo con Sagua la Grande y con la carretera “Circuito Norte” (CN).

Muy cerca de Sagua la grande se encuentra Isabela de Sagua. Para los navegantes situada específicamente en los 79.5º de longitud oeste y los 22.56.30º de latitud norte. Tiene forma de península y forma parte del realengo denominado originalmente “Las Congojas” en el año 1844.

En su inicios el pueblo únicamente tenía una calle, las restantes eran puentes de madera por donde los vecinos circulaban hasta las casas circundantes. Daba la impresión – y hasta hoy se conservan algunas muestras- de estar visitando una suerte de Venecia en el Caribe, sin mucha góndola pero con agua por los cuatro puntos cardinales.

El pueblo fue fundado en 1843 como puerto y aduanas de Sagua y, 5 años después, fue habilitado para el comercio internacional de importación. El huracán Kate (1985) dañó severamente el pueblo, que tuvo que ser reconstruido en gran medida.

CUENTA LA HISTORIA.

Todavía se cuentan las historias de piratas cuando aún Isabela no tenía nombre en honor a ninguna reina.

Respecto a la denominación muchos aseguran que marineros gritaban a voz en cuello “Isa la vela” cuando estaban a punto de partir. Como siempre sucede el tiempo hizo lo suyo y no existen precisiones respecto al origen pese a que tal y como se señaló anteriormente muchas versiones dan por sentado el seguro homenaje a la reina española, Isabel de Castilla, que si bien ya no existía en el año fundacional de su tocaya costera, hizo lo suyo para que el almirante Cristóbal Colón se lanzara en la expedición de su vida en el año 1492.

Y algunos más viejos también dan por sentada la existencia de un tesoro enterrado en Cayo Cristo, pero aunque tantos se aventuraron en la búsqueda regresaron sin recompensa alguna.

También Isabela, no por sus dotes de puerto, fue sede de una Plaza de Toros. Y allí hombres pudientes de la comarca sagüera invertían grandes sumas de dinero.

En las noches de mucha quietud, desde el mar llegan las voces que no se ponen de acuerdo. Y se sienten los pasos lentos de alguien como cargado con un cofre lleno de monedas.

Isabela de Sagua has a port on the northwest coast and a marina in the southwest. Its railway station is the northern terminus of the Santa Clara-Sagua-Isabela line and has some tracks that serve the port. A provincial road links the town with Sagua la Grande and the “Circuito Norte” (CN) road.

In the beginning, the town had only one street, the rest were wooden bridges through which the neighbors circulated to the surrounding houses. It gave the impression – and until today some samples are preserved – of visiting a kind of Venice in the Caribbean, without much gondola but with water through the four cardinal points.

The town was founded in 1843 as a port and customs of Sagua and, 5 years later, was enabled for international import trade. Hurricane Kate (1985) severely damaged the town, which had to be rebuilt greatly.

HISTORY TELLS.

The stories of pirates are still told when Isabella still had no name in honor of any queen.

Regarding the denomination, many say that sailors shouted loudly “Isa la vela” when they were about to leave. As time always happens, he did his thing and there are no clarifications regarding the origin although, as previously stated, many versions take for granted the sure tribute to the Spanish queen, Isabel de Castilla, who although it did not exist in the year Foundational of his coastal namesake, he did his thing so that Admiral Christopher Columbus was launched on the expedition of his life in the year 1492.

And some older ones also take for granted the existence of a treasure buried in Cayo Cristo, but although so many ventured into the search they returned without any reward.

Also Isabela, not because of its harbor skills, hosted a Bullring. And there wealthy men from the Sagüera region invested large sums of money.

In the nights of much stillness, from the sea come the voices that do not agree. And someone’s slow footsteps feel like loaded with a chest full of coins.
