“ACABÓ COMO LA FIESTA DEL GUATAO”.. HISTORIA DE FRASES POPULARES CUBANAS.
El Guatao es un pueblecito al Norte de La Habana, situado cerca del arroyo Bauta. Fue fundado en 1750, sus pobladores tienen un gran arraigo por las fiestas populares que hasta la fecha se celebran como tradición.
En Cuba siempre se recuerda que en una fiesta o reunión y se comienzan a calentarse los ánimos, y las personas se empiezan a irritar por cualquier motivo, el cubano presagia que la cosa va acabar como “la fiesta del Guatao”.
Mucho se especula sobre el origen del famoso dicho que durante siglos ha permanecido en el argot popular cubano y sobre la magnitud de los sucesos de la citada fiesta.
Una de las versiones relata que en 1896, una columna compuesta por unos 200 guardias civiles, voluntarios y soldados españoles salió de Marianao para operar en las zonas vecinas, y en Punta Brava se enfrentó con una partida insurrecta a la que no pudo aniquilar.
Entonces la columna fue hasta el Guatao, cogió a cuantos pudo y los metió en la iglesia, los sacaban amarrados y los mataban en el suelo. Los sucesos terminaron con más de una decena de muertos y un saldo mayor de heridos graves que más tarde fallecieron. Para algunos esa matanza fue lo que dio origen a la frase.
Entre otra de las versiones que existen está la del enamorado celoso que pese a ser un hombre casado, tenía una amante a la que prohibió ir a una de las fiestas del pueblo, y al acudir esta sin su consentimiento fue a buscarla al festejo.
Cuentan que el amante ofendido comenzó a lanzarle insultos a la mujer, quien arremetió contra él haciendo uso del tacón de su zapato. Los vecinos del pueblo tomaron partido a favor de uno u otro bando y se armó una gran pelea, salieron a la luz trapos sucios y discusiones antiguas que se arreglaron a los golpes.
Además de la versión del amante celoso, está las de los negros congos, que borrachos en una celebración popular se entraron a puñetazos y machetazos.
Otra de las historias es la de los campesinos enfadados con un zapatero por la mala calidad del calzado a raíz de un gran aguacero que cayó durante una animada fiesta, y como se pueden imaginar el sentir de la estafa, ligada con el aguardiente, se convirtió en una bomba de tiempo.
Sin importarnos cuántas versiones existan sobre el origen de la famosa frase nos queda bien claro que lo que acaba como “la fiesta del Guatao” acaba mal, acaba en pelea, golpes y hasta con muertos y heridos. Específicamente, acaba en pelea, golpes, y hasta con muertos y heridos.
Así que mejor no estar en algo que termine como “La Fiesta del Guatao”.

Another of the stories is that of the peasants angry with a shoemaker for the poor quality of the footwear following a great downpour that fell during a lively party, and as you can imagine the feeling of the scam, linked to the brandy, became in a time bomb.
Regardless of how many versions exist about the origin of the famous phrase, it is very clear to us that what ends up as “the fiesta del Guatao” ends badly, ends up in a fight, beatings, and even deaths and injuries. Specifically, it ends in fights, blows, and even deaths and injuries.
So better not be in something that ends like “La Fiesta del Guatao”.
