Wifredo Óscar de la Concepción Lam y Castilla nació en 1902 en la localidad de Sagua La Grande, provincia de Villa Clara. Falleció a los 79 años en Paris, Francia. Es considerado uno de los pioneros del llamado modernismo en América Latina y Europa, y uno de los principales pintores cubanos de todos los tiempos.

Un lienzo del emblemático pintor cubano fue vendida por una cifra récord de $ 9.6 millones de dólares por la casa de subastas Sotheby’s, la cual propone una importante colección de obras de arte latinoamericanas.

La venta del cuadro titulado “Omi Obini” superó el récord anterior para las creaciones de artista, luego de que en 2017 se vendiera su obra “A tres centímetros de la tierra”, por $5.2 millones en una subasta en París.

Esta obra de Lam transitó por galerías de La Habana, Washington, Madrid y Paris antes de ser adquirida por la casa de subastas. El óleo, con dimensiones de 177,8 por 126,1 centímetros, está fechado en 1943 (el mismo año en que Lam culminó su obra maestra, La jungla).

“El regreso a Cuba, y el interés actual y renovado en esa tierra, ha producido un nuevo tipo de expresión, una relacionada con el crecimiento de plantas exóticas, dioses y ritos de origen africano practicados hoy en Cuba”, afirmó Art Digest.

“Omi Obini” pertenece a una serie de paisajes antropomórficos de este período en que Lam explora las herencias afrocubanas y trata de interpretarlas en el lienzo. “Lam también usó un estilo ‘puntillista’ para lograr una integración visual entre la figura y el suelo en la repetición continua de pinceladas o trazos de pintura multicolor”, observó una estudiosa del artista antillano, Lowery Stokes Sims.

La Jungla.

Sobre la figura de Omi Obini que inspiró al pintor, su amiga Lydia Cabrera, estudiosa de temas etnográficos y antropológicos de la cultura afrocubana, apuntó: “Ella es el río, Omí Obiní, mujer de agua, ella es la Dama de las aguas frescas que fertiliza la tierra y baila, distribuyendo vida. Se desliza y se desliza entre las cañas, junto a los costados de los cuerpos que se balancean y se balancean, transportados por el ritmo milagroso de la ola, y sus brazos brillantes y caderas conocidas se ondulan al ritmo del agua. Su larga estela es espumosa; el agua alegre se rompe, hierve y salpica contra sus enaguas almidonadas. Su cuerpo brilla con manantiales y corrientes”.

El catálogo de la casa de subastas incluye otras obras de la región como Madre Feliz (1949) de Rufino Tamayo, valorada con una estimación previa a la venta de $ 1,2 millones – $ 1,8 millones, y el retrato de 1971 de Fernando Botero, El Presidente, que lleva una estimación de $ 800 000– $ 1 2 millones y se ofrecerá en la venta del día del arte contemporáneo.

En 2019, la misma casa vendió “Mujer con pájaro”, también de Lam, por un valor de 1,59 millones de dólares, una suma que superó las previsiones.

Sus obras primigenias muestran la influencia de Matisse antes de su traslado a Paris, donde estrecharía relaciones con destacadas figuras de la época como Picasso y André Breton, con quienes se inclinó en la exploración del surrealismo y la abstracción.
