El boxeador cubano Osvary David Morrell conquistó el título de Campeón del Mundo de Boxeo en 168 libras frente al guyanés Lennox Allen, quien se mantenía invicto hasta este encuentro.

Morrell es natural de Villa Clara, tiene 22 años y pesa 164.6 libras. La victoria de este sábado, alzándose con la corona de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo (AMB), lo coloca entre los mejores púgiles de su categoría en el deporte profesional de estos momentos.

El joven ha conseguido convertirse en campeón interino de la AMB ganando tres peleas como profesional. Los dos rivales anteriormente derrotados fueron Yendris Rodríguez y Quinton Rankin, ambos por la vía del nocaut en el primer y segundo asalto respectivamente.

En este tercer combate se le otorgó la victoria por decisión unánime de los jueces, aunque su contrincante, el experimentado Lennox Allen, no se lo puso fácil. Tuvieron que pelear hasta el final en combate pactado a 12 asaltos.

Osvary Morrell abandonó la isla en 2018, tras haberse coronado como campeón mundial juvenil del 2016 en San Petersburgo, Rusia y luego campeón nacional de Cuba en el peso semicompleto.

Su salida del país se consideró una dura pérdida para el boxeo cubano pues se avizoraban grandes éxitos en su carrera como atleta.

El villaclareño tuvo su primera pelea como profesional en agosto de 2019. Ahora Morrell avanza a 3-0 (2KOs) con su reciente victoria, obteniendo una versión interina de un título de peso súper mediano cuyo verdadero aspirante es el inglés Callum Smith.

Osvary David Morrell tiene su residencia y base de entrenamiento en Minneapolis, Minnesota, Estados Unidos.

Cuban boxer Osvary David Morrell won the title of World Boxing Champion at 168 pounds against Guyanese Lennox Allen, who remained undefeated until this meeting.

Morrell is a native of Villa Clara, is 22 years old, and weighs 164.6 pounds. This Saturday’s victory, taking the crown of the World Boxing Association (WBA), places him among the best fighters in his category in professional sports at the moment.

The young man has managed to become the interim champion of the WBA by winning three fights as a professional. The two previously defeated rivals were Yendris Rodriguez and Quinton Rankin, both via knockout in the first and second rounds respectively.

In this third fight, he was awarded the victory by unanimous decision of the judges, although his opponent, the experienced Lennox Allen, did not make it easy for him. They had to fight to the end in a 12-round match.

Osvary Morrell left the island in 2018, having been crowned the 2016 youth world champion in St. Petersburg, Russia, and then Cuban national champion at light heavyweight.

His departure from the country was considered a hard loss for Cuban boxing as great successes were insight in his career as an athlete.

The Villa Clara had his first fight as a professional in August 2019. Now Morrell is advancing to 3-0 (2KOs) with his recent victory, obtaining an interim version of a super middleweight title whose real challenger is Englishman Callum Smith.
