Los dictadores son tacaños en su derrota. Fulgencio Batista, a partir de 1959, no se cansó de proclamar su pobreza, aunque nadie se lo creyera, y otro tanto sucedió con Machado. El día de su fuga, dos de sus ayudantes transportaban el extraño equipaje del ex dictador: ocho saquitos de lona, pesaditos.

En ellos iba, en oro, parte de la fortuna de Machado. Otra parte quedaba en Cuba, al amparo de entidades bancarias, segura al parecer.

Pese al reclamo popular, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, que sucedió a Machado en la presidencia desde el 13 de agosto, no tomó medida alguna contra los depredadores del tesoro de la nación ni confiscó los bienes de los malversadores.

En cambio Grau, llegado al poder al calor del golpe de Estado del 4 de septiembre de 1933, recogió el sentir de la ciudadanía y nombró a un fiscal o acusador popular que les iría arriba a los ladrones.

Gerardo Machado

Solo en un banco habanero fueron selladas más de 12 cajas de seguridad pertenecientes a figuras muy vinculadas con la dictadura derrocada, entre ellas la de Elvira Machado. Contenía joyas muy valiosas y más de un millón de pesos en efectivo.

—¡Eso es un robo! El contenido de esa caja es la fortuna personal de mi esposa. Las joyas son una herencia familiar y tienen el valor total de 106 000 pesos —declaró Machado en Montreal, Canadá.

Añadió: “Creo que la historia me hará justicia. Mi fortuna actual no es desproporcionada con la que tenía cuando ocupé la presidencia. Tenía entonces 400 000 pesos por la venta de la Compañía Cubana de Electricidad y grandes intereses en el central azucarero Carmita. Además de poseer otras plantas eléctricas y fábricas de hielo en diferentes localidades de la Isla…”

El proceso contra los malversadores proseguía en La Habana y el jefe de la Policía Judicial levantaba el inventario de las cajas selladas y ponía los documentos en manos del doctor Guillermo Montagú, magistrado del Tribunal Supremo y juez instructor de la causa.

El fiscal o acusador popular, por su parte, localizaba y sellaba la caja de seguridad del propio Machado. Pero esa vez el ex dictador se movió rápido y con 150 000 pesos sobornó a la comisión de insobornables que perseguían a los ladrones del erario.

Como Machado no desaprovechaba oportunidad alguna para desmentir los comentarios sobre la fortuna fabulosa que se le atribuía, asegurando que estaba «más bien pobre, como pocos en mi condición», alguien decidió jugarle una broma pesada. Una noche, un sobre dirigido a su nombre llegó a la carpeta del hotel canadiense donde se alojaba.

Un bellboy lo subió hasta la habitación del ex mandatario y Machado ordenó que lo abrieran. Sorpresa. Contenía un centavo y una nota en la que se leía: “Como hemos sabido que está tan pobre, sírvase aceptarnos esta modesta ayuda”.

De más está decir que Machado montó en cólera.

La Historia se repite.

THE “POVERTY” OF THE CUBAN DICTATORS ON TURN. A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY.

The process against the embezzlers continued in Havana and the chief of the Judicial Police took the inventory of the sealed boxes and placed the documents in the hands of Dr. Guillermo Montagú, magistrate of the Supreme Court and judge investigating the case.

The public prosecutor or accuser, for his part, located and sealed Machado’s own safe. But that time the ex-dictator moved fast and with 150,000 pesos he bribed the commission of the unbearable who were chasing the thieves of the treasury.

As Machado did not miss any opportunity to deny the comments about the fabulous fortune attributed to him, assuring that he was “rather poor, like few in my condition”, someone decided to play a prank on him. One night, an envelope addressed to his name reached the folder of the Canadian hotel where he was staying.

A bellboy brought him up to the former president’s room and Machado ordered that it be opened. Surprise. It contained a penny and a note reading: “Since we have learned that you are so poor, please accept this modest aid.”

Needless to say, Machado was furious.
