Desde los tiempos de la Cuba republicana hay expresiones cubanas que surgen y que permanecen para siempre. No hablo de frases habituales como “era su tiempo”, tantas veces repetidas en los velatorios, o “así es la vida”, que implica resignación, ni me refiero a refranes.

Más bien, me estoy enfocando en expresiones que surgen de la imaginación popular en ciertas circunstancias y luego continúan usándose más allá del evento que las provocó. A veces los incluimos en nuestras conversaciones sin saber de dónde vienen. Los humoristas y compositores musicales también crean expresiones que perduran. Sin retroceder demasiado en el tiempo, por ejemplo, la letra de un cha-cha-cha popularizado por la Orquesta Aragón en los años 50, “Toma chocolate” (“Bebe tu chocolate caliente”, al que le siguieron las palabras “Paga su factura ”) todavía sirven como una forma proverbial de recordarle a alguien que cumpla con sus deudas o promesas.

ARSENIO RODRIGUEZ EN “EL CERRO TIENE LA LLAVE”.

En esa misma línea, la expresión “El Cerro tiene la llave” es el nombre de una guaracha compuesta por Fernando Noa en 1949, musicalizada y convertida en hit por Arsenio Rodríguez, también conocido como el “ciego maravilloso”, que revolucionó el formato instrumental de los conjuntos de música popular y dio un nuevo sonido al son cubano.

Cerro es uno de los 15 municipios o distritos de la ciudad de La Habana. A partir de 2016 es considerado “uno de los municipios más pobres de La Habana”.

¿Por qué Cerro tiene la llave?

Da la casualidad de que el Zanja Real (1592), primer acueducto construido por los españoles en América, pasaba por la localidad de Cerro, al igual que los canales del Acueducto de Fernando VII (1835); y las acequias del Acueducto Albear (1893), de las cuales se bombea el agua a toda la ciudad, están en Palatino, un distrito del Cerro. Por eso Cerro tiene la llave.

Este municipio habanero, según sus propios vecinos, también tiene las “claves” del deporte (antiguo Stadium the Cerro) y la perfumería (antiguas Crusellas y Sabates): alberga las mayores fábricas de jabones y perfumes del país.

Las fabricas de Jabones y productos de limpieza Crusellas y Sabates fabricaban jabones para lavar, amarillos y blancos, nombrados Universal, Calabaza, Caramelo, Veta Azul, Coco y Sabatés. Estas denominaciones cambiaron más adelante y surgieron las marcas “La Llave” –el nombre que posiblemente se relacione tambien con conocida frase “El Cerro tiene la llave”, la muy aceptada Oso y el jabón de olor Camay.

Otro de los productos que producian las fabricas del Cerro eran los polvos, jabones y colonia Mercedes, y más adelante los jabones Hiel de Vaca y Palmolive. Además patentizó nuevos perfumes como la “Kolonia 1800 y Rhum-Quin-Quina, que fueron las primeras manufacturas de la Compañía Nacional de Perfumería, parte integrante de esa firma.

Hoy, más allá del agua, los deportes y los perfumes, la expresión “clave” revela el orgullo y el sentido de pertenencia que tienen los habitantes del Cerro por su barrio, que se convirtió en un paso ineludible entre La Habana y el occidente de Cuba.

Es una clave que perdura en el imaginario popular de los pobladores del Cerro, que a pesar de su probreza actual, permanecerá para siempre en la habitual expresion de los cubanos.

Why does Cerro have the key?

This Havana municipality, according to its own neighbors, also has the “keys” of sport (former Stadium the Cerro) and perfumery (former Crusellas and Sabates): it houses the largest soap and perfume factories in the country. Founded since the Cuban Republic period.

The Crusellas and Sabates soaps and cleaning products factories manufactured yellow and white soaps for washing, named Universal, Calabaza, Caramelo, Veta Azul, Coco, and Sabatés. These denominations later changed and the brands “La Llave” arose – the name that is possibly also related to the well-known phrase “El Cerro has the key”, the widely accepted Bear and the Camay scent soap.

Another of the products that the Cerro factories produced were Mercedes powders, soaps and cologne, and later the Hiel de Vaca and Palmolive soaps. He also patented new perfumes such as “Kolonia 1800 and Rhum-Quin-Quina, which were the first manufactures of the National Perfume Company, an integral part of that firm.

Today, beyond water, sports and perfumes, the expression “key” reveals the pride and sense of belonging that the inhabitants of the Cerro have for their neighborhood, which became an unavoidable passage between Havana and the west of Cuba.

It is a key that lasts in the popular imagination of the inhabitants of Cerro, which despite its current poverty, will remain forever in the usual expression of Cubans.
