Hoy vamos a referirnos a una frase que es cotidiana en el hablar del Cubano de hoy y lo ha sido siempre.

Estamos hablando de un personaje que más viejo que él es muy difícil llegar a serlo, aunque lo repitamos casi a diario.

En nuestro argot si afirmamos que una persona es “más viejo que Matusalén” es una frase bastante metafórica si tenemos en cuenta la edad de este personaje.

El record de longevidad bíblica está en posesión de Matusalén con 969 años, es decir casi un milenio, se dice que fue hijo de Enoch y padre de Lameo y según la Biblia ha sido el más anciano de todos los mortales. Esta cuestión hay básicamente tres interpretaciones. Por un lado, se afirma que pudo ser un error en la traducción de los textos, en cuanto a la referencia cíclica lunar y la solar, de modo que en tal situación, habría alcanzado en realidad los 72 años.

Esta supuesta longevidad de Matusalén, de quien presumimos que llevaría una vida muy sana en las montañas, lejos del tabaco y las bebidas alcohólicas, con una dieta de vegetales y con muy bajos niveles en su colesterol, ha dado motivos para que se recuerde siempre entre los cubanos en una frase que es toda exageración, algo muy típico entre nosotros.

Este es un clásico ejemplo de una charla cotidiana.

Sin embargo Matusalén también ha cobrado vigencia entre los cubanos debido a que le da nombre a la marca de uno de nuestros rones, caracterizado por supuesto por un alto grado de añejamiento.

HISTORIA DE NUESTRO RON “MATUSALEM”.

La casa de nuestro famoso ron (Matusalem & Company) fue fundada por los hermanos Benjamín y Eduardo Camp, quienes dejaron España y se establecieron en Santiago de Cuba en 1872 con el propósito de establecer una destilería de ron, los hermanos Camp trajeron consigo sus conocimientos y experiencia en el sistema de solera de mezcla y destilación utilizado en la elaboración de coñac y jerez español.

Durante la década de 1950, la marca fue uno de los mejores rones premium en Cuba, compitiendo con Bacardí y Havana Club, con una participación de mercado del 50%. Después de la revolución cubana de 1959, la marca familiar Matusalem se exilió y se estableció en los Estados Unidos. En 2002, se relanzó Matusalem and Company, con la marca centrada en sus raíces cubanas y dirigida al mercado de alta gama en los Estados Unidos. El ron se produce en la República Dominicana, pero no se hizo formalmente disponible en ese país hasta 2015.

HISTORY OF OUR RUM “MATUSALEM”.

The house of our famous rum (Matusalem & Company) was founded by the brother’s Benjamin and Eduardo Camp, who left Spain and settled in Santiago de Cuba in 1872 with the purpose of establishing a rum distillery, the Camp brothers brought their knowledge with them and experience in the mixing and distillation solera system used in the production of cognac and Spanish sherry.

During the 1950s, the brand was one of the best premium rums in Cuba, competing with Bacardi and Havana Club, with a 50% market share. After the 1959 Cuban revolution, the Matusalem family brand went into exile and established itself in the United States. In 2002, Matusalem and Company were relaunched, with the brand focusing on its Cuban roots and targeting the high-end market in the United States.
