“Los Zafiros” fue un grupo vocal cubano de estrecha armonía que trabajó desde 1962 hasta 1976. El grupo fue parte del movimiento filín (sentimiento), inspirado en grupos doo-wop estadounidenses como The Platters. Su música era una fusión de géneros cubanos, como el bolero, con doo-wop, baladas, R&B, calipso, Bossa Nova y rock and roll temprano.

Los Zafiros fueron formados en Cayo Hueso, La Habana en 1962, por Miguel Ángel Cancio Soria, el Grupo original de “Los Zafiros” estaban compuestos por los siguientes miembros. RECUERDOS DE MIGUEL CANCIO, FUNDADOR DE LOS ZAFIROS.

“Nací en la calle Habana 1019, esquina San Isidro, en el barrio de Belén (San Isidro), el 11 de enero de 1939, el mismo año en que se inauguró el cabaret Tropicana.

Cuando era niño, practicaba el canto, hacer armonías vocales me resultó natural, no fue difícil para mí. Aunque algunas personas solían decirme que nací para ser abogado o médico. Entré por casualidad con el pianista Facundo Rivero (hermano de la cantante Elsa Rivero), en la calle Márquez González, entre Neptuno y Concordia.

Facundo me preguntó si había venido a presentarme, si había venido al ensayo; me preguntó si sabía cantar y si sabía bailar. Puso en escena la canción “Majarete”. Me enganché por casualidad, lo que te pertenece. nadie se lo puede quitar. Una semana después actuamos en el cabaret Sans Souci el 17 de diciembre de 1956, donde también actuaban el grupo D’Aida y Portillo de la Luz. También inauguramos el espectáculo de cabaret Copa Boom en el Hotel Riviera; ese programa fue transmitido en el programa de Steve Allen, un programa sensacional en la TV Noreamericana entonces. Llegamos a actuar en Venezuela durante seis meses, en 1959, con Balmaseda. Luego el cuarteto se desintegró y comencé a trabajar como coreógrafo. También escribí y pude hacer cosas con la pareja Olga y Tony que se presentó con Rolando Laserie”.

COMIENZA EL GRUPO “LOS ZAFIROS”.

Y continua Miguel en la entrevista que le hiciera Daniel Quesada en Hotel Capri de la Habana en 1997.. “Conocí a Leoncio Moría “Kike” del barrio Cayo Hueso, nos hicimos amigos, luego él se convirtió en mi cuñado. Kike conocía a Mili, vivía cerca. Kike me puso al teléfono con Ignacio Elejalde, lo escuché cantar la canción italiana “Come prima”, pensé que era una voz de mujer. Tenía una voz femenina fenomenal. A partir de ahí nos conocimos en casa de Néstor Milí y me asombró su condición vocal.

Ignacio conocía al Chino, al día siguiente lo trajo y se presentó con un kimono y la cabeza rapada.

Primero vino Robles Díaz, luego Robles no continuó y llegó Oscar Aguirre con una guitarra eléctrica. Oscar también era cantante, quería participar en el grupo vocal y no era posible, éramos cuatro voces y una guitarra. Oscar se fue a Miami y allí cambió su nombre a Oscar Fontana. Tres meses después nos encontramos con Manuel Galbán, muy experimentado, que era quien realmente encajaba en el grupo. Tocaba el piano y la guitarra, de profesión tocaba repertorios.

En la casa de Néstor Milí, luego fuimos a la casa de la hermana de Kike, se llamaba Gisela, vivía en San Rafael, a pocas cuadras de Milí. Allí montamos “Mi oración”, “Cuando yo la conocí”, “Y sabes bien” de Robles Díaz y “La Caminadora”, una guaracha que Kike tuvo la idea de convertir en conga y es de Néstor Milí.

El nombre urge en un bar Artemio, en San Rafael y San Francisco, quisieron nombrar al grupo Los Fakires, hasta que gracias a uno de los anillos de los integrantes que tenía una piedra de zafiro se llamó Los Zafiros.

Las canciones fueron grabadas en una grabadora en el bar de Artemio, la gente pensaba que eran de un grupo de Jamaica, del extranjero.

Entonces fuimos a una audición en El Escondite de Hernando Club en Humboldt y O Street. Allí cantó Lino Borges acompañado de una conga. Bueno, nos dijeron que no era por ese tipo de música que estábamos haciendo y nos echaron.

Se acordó ir al programa de TV Música y Estrellas del director Manolo Rifat; alquilamos trajes para ello. También aparecimos en el programa de Rosita Fornés, que solía ser el ‘Casino de la Alegría’. Después de eso, pudimos cantar en el cabaret del Hotel Oasis y el cuarteto fue un éxito.

En el Cabaret Nacional de San Rafael y Prado, bajo el teatro que se llama Teatro Nacional, fuimos al Cabaret Caribe del Hotel Habana Libre, una de las novias de Roberto Cantoral vino a vernos cantar una y se sorprendió por la forma en que cantaba Ignacio “ La novia ”, que terminó con un gran final arrodillándose y diciendo: ¡Ave María! QUE FUERON DE “LOS ZAFIROS”?

De los Zafiros dos murieron jóvenes, Ignacio murió en 1981 a la edad de 37 años de una hemorragia cerebral. Kike murió en 1983 de cirrosis hepática. El Chino, acosado por problemas de visión, habla y bebida, vivió solo en Cayo Hueso hasta su muerte el 8 de agosto de 1995 a los 56 años.

Manuel Galbán y su esposa vivieron en la misma casa en La Habana que en el apogeo de Los Zafiros, hasta que murió de un paro cardíaco el 7 de julio de 2011. Participó activamente en la escena musical cubana a través de su trabajo en The Buena Vista Social Club y como artista de grabación de World Circuit Records. En 2001, World Circuit organizó una sesión especial de grabación para Galbán y Cancio en EGREM. Junto a Orlando López (Cachaito), Roberto García y Bernardo García (Chori), Cancio y Galbán grabaron dos de sus viejas canciones. Esta sesión juega un papel central en la película y marca la primera vez que Galbán y Cancio graban juntos en más de treinta años. En 1987 fue creado en la Habana un nuevo grupo que precisamente se dió a conocer como “los Nuevos Zafiros”.

Miguel Cancio en Cuba, luego de que fuera dado de baja en el Ministerio de Cultura cubano, al conocerse que su familia se habia ido para los Estados Unidos, el pudo emigrar como refugiado politico en 1993.

Hoy solo está vivo un integrante, Miguel Cancio, que vive en Miami.

Three months later we met Manuel Galbán, very experienced, who was the one who really fit in with the group. He played piano and guitar, by profession he played repertoires.

At Néstor Milí’s house, then we went to the house of Kike’s sister, her name was Gisela, she lived in San Rafael, a few blocks from Milí. There we staged “My prayer”, “When I met her”, “And you know well” by Robles Díaz and “La Caminadora”, a guaracha that Kike had the idea of ​​turning into a conga and is by Néstor Milí.
