Elena Burke nació el 28 de febrero de 1928 y su nombre era Romana Elena Burguez González, reconocida tambien como la Sra. Sentimiento.
Muchos músicos cubanos son considerados genios y leyendas, por eso cuando se dice que Elena Burke es una de las mejores cantantes cubanas de todos los tiempos, eso es algo que no se puede tomar a la ligera.
Traspasando las reglas exteriores ‘Mrs. Feeling’ (Señora Sentimiento) ha sido una de las figuras más reconocidas y queridas del panorama musical de la isla. Tuvo una brillante carrera como solista, pero también dio su majestad de gala como parte de las ‘Mulatas de Fuego’, ‘Las Cancioneras’, el ‘cuarteto de Facundo Rivero’, el cuarteto de ‘Orlando de La Rosa’ y las ‘d ‘Aida’.
En la década de 1940 inicia su carrera artística, tras deslumbrar al jurado del concurso radial ‘La Corte Suprema del Arte’ con su interpretación de “No vale la pena”, del pianista Orlando de la Rosa.
Tras este éxito, la emisora Mil Diez la contrata para ocupar un espacio de 15 minutos denominado ‘Ensoñación’, en el que estuvo acompañada por la orquesta de Kiko González Mantici. Junto a sus programas de radio, actuó en varios cabarets y espectáculos, con el pianista Dámaso Pérez Prado como compañero musical.
Elena Burke fue la primera voz femenina en Cuba que se adentraba en las armonías del sentimiento, haciéndolo con gran elegancia y demostrando una habilidad increíble.
Después de su debut, Lady Feeling llamó la atención de varios compositores importantes. El primer grupo que cuenta con sus servicios fue Las Mulatas de Fuego, dirigido por Litico Rodríguez. Poco tiempo después realizó una gira por Venezuela y Jamaica con el cuarteto de Facundo Rivero.
Paralelamente, trabajó con el cuarteto de Orlando de la Rosa, donde por primera vez trabajó con Omara Portuondo. Este dúo, años después, se convierte en parte fundamental del cuarteto d’Aida, con el que Elena permanecerá hasta 1958, cuando comienza su carrera en solitario.
Elena Burke se convirtió en los años 60 en una de las joyas más codiciadas por todos los cabarets, clubes y lounges de La Habana y Cuba en su conjunto. Compartió escenario con muchos artistas, como Bobby Collazo, Frank Dominguez, Meme Solis, Ela O’Farrill, Rolando Aguilo y Rey Montesinos.
Lady Feeling también ganó escenarios en España, Francia y México, donde participó en importantes festivales. Ya en la década de 1970, fue una artista reconocida en lugares tan lejanos como Japón, donde realizó varias giras.
Elena se ganó, cantando y cantando, un lugar privilegiado entre los cubanos, aun cuando otras boleristas ya habían sembrado raíces y continuaron su carrera en otros países. Ella nació para ser diva, de aquellas que lo mismo se presentaban en un escenario lleno de luces, como en un bar sombrío. Quienes la conocieron dicen que era la cubana más simpática del mundo y una enamorada sin ataduras.
Nuestra Elena Burke se destaco por sus interpretaciones a capella desbordando pasión y talento. Tenía un estilo marcado por la falta de adornos innecesarios y una afinación impecable. Fue dueña de una amplia gama de géneros, en los que brilló como una reina.
Permaneció activa hasta el final de su vida el 9 de junio de 2002.
Gracias a Elena hoy tenemos muchos recuerdos, sus canciones y motivos para querer o para no perdonar jamás. La Burke nos dejó a Malena, a Lena y a todas las que siguieron su misma trayectoria. Por tanto, para escucharla no hay que tener alma de viejo, sólo hace falta tener alma.
