DICE EL HABLA DE MI PUEBLO que el mejor invento de los gallegos fueron las ‘mulatas’.
Y lo que a continuación voy a narrar ratifica cuán cierto es el mensaje que nos transmite el habla popular.
Los Pedroso se alarmaron cuando Francisquito, heredero del clan, comenzó a bizquear.
Y no era que el muchacho padeciese de estrabismo. En lo absoluto. Los ojos sólo se le ponían en blanco cuando cerca de él pasaba algún ejemplar femenino que tuviese lo que entonces llamaban “la color quebrada”.
No eran los Pedrosos ningunos pata’epuercos. Ese apellido se mezclaba con la crema y nata de la aristocracia cubana: los Peñalver, los Zayas Bazán, los Calvo de la Puerta. Había entre ellos marqueses y condes, comendadores de la Orden de Isabel la Católica, caballeros de Santiago y de Calatrava, y hasta algún gentilhombre de cámara de su majestad, en ejercicio.
Y cuenta la investigadora Berta Caballero que el encumbrado Francisco Pedroso y Pedroso se casó con la parda Agustina Mauri, manejadora de la casa. De ella recibiría una copiosa prole de seis mulaticos, para hacer bueno el refrán según el cual “aquí el que no tiene de congo, tiene de carabalí”, o “el que no tiene de dinga, tiene de mandinga”.
El escándalo ocurrió a finales del siglo XIX. La familia enterró en vida a quien había roto las reglas del juego, y con una tapia dividió definitivamente la casa del clan, en la habanera intersección de las calles de Cuba y Empedrado en La Habana eterna, nuestra Habana.
Y me cuentan que hasta bien entrado el siglo XX, los transeúntes señalaban al inmueble como “la casa del Pedroso que se casó con una mulata”.
