Los cubanos por lo general somos unas personas superticiosas, es por lo cual dice una considerable mayoria, que para evitar catástrofes de cualquier tipo resulta mejor sucumbir a simples actos inofensivos de superstición que hasta hoy en dia practican jóvenes y viejos, pobres y ricos, emigrados y en la Isla.

Vamos a referirnos a varias de las más conocidas superticiones y costumbres proveniente de ellas.

Una costumbre supersticiosa muy extendida en Cuba es ECHAR UNAS GOTAS DE RON EN EL PISO de la casa al abrir una botella y antes de servir el primer trago. De hecho, en la Isla casi todo el mundo lo hace, hasta los más ateos que no juran ni por su madre. Asimismo, la mayoría desconoce el propósito mítico de este acto. Dicen las malas lenguas que así los santos te bendicen. Se trata de una especie de saludo a los muertos.

TOCAR MADERA es otro de los hábitos más generalizados en los cubanos. Si en medio de la conversación sale un tema escabroso como enfermedades, muerte o desastres, casi siempre el cubano “toca madera” para no padecer del mismo mal. El origen de dicha superstición es poco conocido. Los indios americanos pensaban que los golpes servían para despertar y liberar a los espíritus encerrados en los árboles. Otra posible teoría está en el cristianismo, porque tocar madera era como estar tocando la cruz de Jesucristo que les iba a brindar protección.

Dicen los cubanos mas viejos que MECER UN SILLON SIN NADIE sentado invoca a los espíritus y es de mala suerte. De seguro, muchos cubanos recordarán que esta era una de las cosas que más se cuidaba en casa.

En muchas ocasiones los cubanos TEMEN HABLAR porque piensan que hacer las cosas de forma callada, evita que se malogren. Esto puede aplicarse al trabajo, el amor, a cualquier negocio o proyecto, pero sobre todo a viajes al extranjero. Esta costumbre pudiera tener su génesis en una frase de José Martí: “En silencio ha tenido que ser, porque hay cosas que para lograrlas han de andar ocultas…”

Por otra parte, siempre el 31 DE DICIEMBRE, a las doce de la noche, no falta alguno que otro “loco” dándole la vuelta a la manzana con una maleta vacía para que en un futuro lleguen muchos viajes y aventuras. Junto a esta tradición de fin de año se suma ECHAR UN CUBO DE AGUA para que se vaya todo lo malo.

¿Por qué si los cubanos somos un pueblo tan instruido, no faltan en el día a día los actos supersticiosos? Si bien nuestra rica idiosincrasia y legado cultural pudieran ser el origen de dichas creencias, lo cierto es que en la “luchita” constante del cubano por sobreponerse a las adversidades y seguir su camino sin tregua hasta alcanzar la meta trazada, muchas veces resulta agradable saber que alguien, desde arriba, abajo, al centro o al costado, los está guiando.

WHY MOST OF THE CUBANS ARE SO SUPERSTITIOUS…

TOUCHING WOOD is another of the most widespread habits in Cubans. If in the middle of the conversation a rugged topic comes up, such as illness, death, or disasters, almost always the Cuban “knocks on wood” so as not to suffer from the same illness. The origin of this superstition is little known. The American Indians thought that the blows served to awaken and liberate the spirits locked in the trees. Another possible theory is in Christianity because touching wood was like touching the cross of Jesus Christ that was going to provide protection.

Older Cubans say that DESERVING AN ARMCHAIR WITH NO ONE sitting invokes the spirits and is bad luck. For sure, many Cubans will remember that this was one of the things that were most cared for at home.

On many occasions, Cubans FEAR TO TALK because they think that doing things quietly prevents them from going bad. This can be applied to work, love, to any business or project, but especially to trips abroad. This custom could have its genesis in a phrase by José Martí: “In silence, it has had to be, because there are things that to achieve them have to be hidden …”

On the other hand, always on DECEMBER 31, at twelve o’clock at night, there is no missing one or another “crazy” going around the block with an empty suitcase so that in the future many trips and adventures arrive. Along with this end-of-the-year tradition, we add a BUCKET OF WATER to make all the bad things go away.

Why, if we Cubans are such educated people, are superstitious acts not lacking on a daily basis? Although our rich idiosyncrasy and cultural legacy could be the origin of these beliefs, the truth is that in the constant “little struggle” of the Cuban to overcome adversity and continue his path without respite until reaching the goal set, it is often pleasant to know that someone, from above, below, to the center or to the side, is guiding them.
