President-elect Joe Biden on Monday named Alejandro Mayorkas as his US Homeland Security secretary, a move that could make the Cuban-American and former California federal prosecutor the first Latino to hold a position in the future cabinet.

Alejandro N. Mayorkas was born in Habana, Cuba on November 24, 1959, he is a Cuban-American lawyer who served as the Deputy Secretary of the United States Department of Homeland Security from December 23, 2013, to October 31, 2016. Mayorkas practices in the areas of civil and criminal litigation, internal investigations, cybersecurity, crisis management, and strategic counseling.

Mayorkas attended UC Berkeley and began working for the Government as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Central District of California, specializes in white-collar crimes, according to the announcement by the transition team from Biden. Upon his appointment, he became the nation’s youngest US attorney, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Under the Obama Administration, Mayorkas was one of the architects of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which seeks to benefit undocumented immigrants who entered the United States as children and negotiator of the thaw in relations between Washington and Havana.

Biden added Mayorkas to his growing roster of selections for cabinet positions focused on national security and foreign policy, as a growing number of experts from Trump’s own party call on him to begin the transition. Republicans argue that the president’s attempts to undermine an election he clearly lost are threatening America’s national security.

“We have no time to waste when it comes to our national security and foreign policy, I need a team ready from day one to help me regain America’s position at the head of the table, unite the world to face the greatest challenges we face. we stand up and promote our security, prosperity and values. This is the crux of that team, “Biden said in a statement Monday.

The task that Mayorkas will face involves putting himself at the head of a department, the third largest in the Federal Government, with some 240,000 employees.

Biden has vowed to reverse many of Trump’s immigration policies, enacted by an unprecedentedly politicized Department of Homeland Security. Recently, Trump officials suffered another defeat in their protracted attempt to end the DACA program, which Biden promised to fully restore as one of his first moves in office.

Mayorkas has already held the top position in USCIS, the Homeland Security agency that administers the legal immigration system, and was for several years deputy director of the Department of Homeland Security under the Obama Administration.

He also helped guide the Department’s response to Ebola and Zika. Both Biden and his designated officials so far have made it clear that the new government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic will be the most immediate and urgent priority.

The Department of Homeland Security, created in the wake of September 11, has a broad mandate that ranges from emergency response to electoral security to immigration enforcement.

In 2008, The National Law Journal named Mayorkas one of the “50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in America.” In 2019, Latino Leaders Magazine named him one of the 101 most influential leaders in the nation’s Latino community.

El presidente electo Joe Biden nombró el lunes a Alejandro Mayorkas como su secretario de Seguridad Nacional (Homeland Security) de EEUU, una medida que podría convertir al cubanoamericano y exfiscal federal de California en el primer latino en ocupar un puesto en el futuro gabinete.

Alejandro N. Mayorkas nació en La Habana, Cuba el 24 de noviembre de 1959, es un abogado cubanoamericano que se desempeñó como subsecretario del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional de los Estados Unidos del 23 de diciembre de 2013 al 31 de octubre de 2016. Mayorkas prácticas en las áreas de litigio civil y penal, investigaciones internas, ciberseguridad, manejo de crisis y asesoría estratégica.

Mayorkas, asistió a UC Berkeley y comenzó a trabajar para el Gobierno como asistente del fiscal de los Estados Unidos en el Distrito Central de California, está especializado en delitos de cuello blanco, según el anuncio del equipo de transición de Biden. Los republicanos argumentan que los intentos del presidente de socavar una elección que claramente perdió están amenazando la seguridad nacional de Estados Unidos.

“No tenemos tiempo que perder cuando se trata de nuestra seguridad nacional y política exterior, necesito un equipo listo desde el primer día para ayudarme a recuperar el puesto de Estados Unidos a la cabeza de la mesa, unir al mundo para enfrentar los mayores desafíos que enfrentamos y promover nuestra seguridad, prosperidad y valores. La tarea que enfrentará Mayorkas supone ponerse a la cabeza de un departamento, el tercero más grande del Gobierno Federal, con unos 240.000 empleados.

Biden ha prometido revertir muchas de las políticas de inmigración de Trump, promulgadas por un Departamento de Seguridad Nacional con una politización sin precedentes. Recientemente, los funcionarios de Trump sufrieron otra derrota en su prolongado intento de poner fin al programa DACA, que Biden prometió restaurar por completo como uno de sus primeros movimientos en el cargo.

Mayorkas ya ha ocupado el puesto más alto en USCIS, la agencia de Seguridad Nacional que administra el sistema de inmigración legal, y fue durante varios años subdirector del departamento de Seguridad Nacional bajo la Administración de Obama.
