In general, in Cuba, parents want to give their children the same name, so that a tradition begins in the family; the mother assures that the best thing is to call the girl after the protagonist of that novel because she had very good luck. Meanwhile, the grandmother says that they should name the little one after the saint of the day he was born.

In Cuba, one of the most recurrent alternatives in this conflict is to use an initial that serves to identify the family. The problem is when the “cute” names run out and parents get creative without thinking about the future of their children. This is what happened on the Island with generation Y from 1993.

GENERATION “Y”

The fashion for naming babies with such peculiar names coincides with the arrival in 1962 of thousands of Russian soldiers who were stationed on the Island for the next 33 years. It seems that the Russian names that begin with “Y”, such as Yordanka, Yuri, Yevgeny, Yaremka, Yaroslav, and Yakov, impacted Cubans for their exoticism. When in Cuba they realized that Russian names with “Y” were not so abundant, popular ingenuity invented hundreds of new names that begin with “Y”, which in turn gave rise to “generation Y”.

This preference for the letter Y has no scientific explanation. It could well be due to some Aboriginal words, famous place names in other languages, or simply a matter of fashion. The truth is that there are thousands of Cubans who have names that begin with Y.

According to some studies, Y is the fourth most used initial in the case of men, only surpassed by J, A, and R. For its part, Y occupies the first place in women, with Yanet as the name more common.

Others, very frequently in the case of women, are Yaima, Yadira, Yudeisi, Yuneisy, Yunisleydis, etc. Meanwhile, in men, we find Yoan, Yoel, or Yasmani. In fact, many famous Cubans, especially athletes, are part of this phenomenon: Yotuel (singer), Yipsi Moreno (martillista), Yarisley Silva (peer), and two of the Gourriel brothers, Yulieski and Yuniesky.

Although at present the letter A is gaining more spaces between the names of Cubans, the truth is that children continue to be born who, due to a matter of habit, inherit the name of their father or mother, and with this, the traditional Y of their generation.

HERENCIA, TRADICION Y LA GENERACION CUBANA “Y”.

Por lo general en Cuba los padres quieren ponerles a sus hijos su mismo nombre, para que así comience una tradición en la familia; la madre asegura que lo mejor es llamar a la niña igual que la protagonista de aquella novela, pues tenía muy buena suerte. Mientras, la abuelita dice que deberían nombrar al pequeño igual que el santo del día en que nació.

En Cuba, una de las alternativas más recurrentes en este conflicto es la de utilizar una inicial que sirva para identificar a la familia. El problema está cuando los nombres “lindos” se acaban y los padres se ponen creativos sin pensar en el futuro de sus hijos. Así sucedió en la Isla con la generación Y a partir del año 1993.

LA GENERACION “Y”

La moda de apodar a los bebés con nombres tan peculiares coincide con el arribo en 1962 de miles de soldados rusos que se estacionaron en la Isla durante los siguientes 33 años. Tal parece que los nombre rusos que empiezan por “Y”, como son los casos de Yordanka, Yuri, Yevgeny, Yaremka, Yaroslav y Yakov, impactaron por su exotismo a los cubanos. Cuando en Cuba se percataron que los nombres rusos con “Y”, no eran tan abundantes, el ingenio popular inventó cientos de nuevos nombres que empiezan con “Y”, lo que a su vez dio origen a la “generación Y”.

Esta preferencia por la letra Y no tiene una explicación científica. Bien podría ser por algunas palabras de los aborígenes, por nombres lugares famosos en otras lenguas o simplemente por una cuestión de moda. Lo cierto es que son miles los cubanos que tienen nombres que comienzan con Y.

Según algunos estudios, la Y es la cuarta inicial más utilizada en el caso de los hombres, solo superada por la J, la A y la R. Por su parte, en las mujeres la Y ocupa el primer puesto, con Yanet como el nombre más común.

Otros, muy frecuentes en el caso de las mujeres son Yaima, Yadira, Yudeisi, Yuneisy, Yunisleydis, etc. Mientras, en los hombres encontramos a Yoan, Yoel o Yasmani. De hecho, muchos famosos cubanos, sobre todo deportistas, son parte de este fenómeno: Yotuel (cantante), Yipsi Moreno (martillista), Yarisley Silva (pertiguista) y dos de los hermanos Gourriel, Yulieski y Yuniesky.

Aunque en la actualidad la letra A está ganando más espacios entre los nombres de los cubanos, lo cierto es que siguen naciendo niños que por una cuestión de costumbre heredan el nombre de su padre o madre, y con este, la tradicional Y de su generación.
