His goal is to perfect a race that mixes bravery with fortitude, a winning formula that nothing and no one can defeat.

Así piensa Jorge Félix, un pequeño empresario que posee más de 200 crías de gallos peleadores que lo llenan de orgullo. Desde criollos, famosos por su valentía en la pelea y que nunca dan un paso atrás, hasta ejemplares importados que ha hecho traer de lejanas tierras para cruzarlos con sus gallos cubanos.

Su objetivo es perfeccionar una raza que mezcle la valentía con la fortaleza, una fórmula ganadora que nada ni nadie pueda derrotar.

A todos los cuida con esmero y vigila su dieta, las horas que pasan al aire libre y, sobre todo, el entrenamiento.

En parte porque son muchos gallos y galleros para tan pocas vallas “oficiales”. Incluso, hay provincias del país donde no existe ningún espacio legal para pelear gallo.

Así que a muchos no les queda más remedio que sumirse en el clandestinaje para dar rienda suelta a su afición.

El criador reconoce, no obstante, que en las peleas clandestinas se producen muchos actos de violencia motivados por las apuestas; pero se niega a culpar a los gallos de este fenómeno.

Expresa que la inmensa mayoría de los apostadores son personas serias y respetables y que no por gusto a las peleas de gallos se le conoce como el “juego de los caballeros”. El público que suele acudir a estas riñas de gallos suele ser heterogéneo en edad y clase social o formación.

Saben que la policía sabe dónde están, pero las toleran mientras no crucen determinados límites.

Jorge Félix opina que las vallas se deberían legalizar y organizar, porque, después de todo la gente va a seguir peleando gallos.
