Those who visit Cuba for the first time may be surprised by a very common expression on the island: “Coger Botella” (take a bottle). It is a way of getting around that consists of stopping a vehicle, generally making a sign with the thumb, to ask drivers for free transportation.

For Cubans “catch” means grab. It is the equivalent of hitchhiking, hitchhiking, or how they would say in Venezuela, “ask for the tail”, an expression that could also surprise those who hear it for the first time.

Someone unsuspecting might think that the expression has something to do with “traffic jam”, but the truth is that Cuba does not usually have that much traffic. An interesting theory about its origin is the following:

“Catch bottle” may be related to the meaning of bottle, which in popular language meant receiving a salary for a position that was not actually held. They were concessions from corrupt politicians. So I suppose “taking a bottle” (Coger Botella) was like earning transportation without paying.

Taking a bottle is a way to get around in Cuba.

Living in any city implies having the possibility of commuting every day to go to work, school, the doctor or to have fun. If the city is of a certain size, it is not always possible to do it on foot or by bicycle. So sooner or later, everyone needs public transportation.

In the 1990s, when the Soviet Union disappeared, the island’s economy entered the so-called “special period” which, among other things, limited the number of self-propelled units, the maintenance and the frequency of public transport routes.

As a result of this situation, the practice of ordering a bottle became popular in Cuba. It is an activity that speaks of insufficient public transport. However, it also says a lot about security and solidarity among Cubans, without which this practice would not be possible.

While it is true that there are “stubborn botelleros” (those who assume that drivers have an obligation to carry them) and “charity drivers” (those who act without any solidarity), it is important to note that this widespread practice is only possible due to the open and fraternal character of the majority of the island’s inhabitants

Alguien desprevenido podría pensar que la expresión tiene algo que ver con «embotellamiento», pero la verdad en Cuba no suele haber tanto tráfico. Una teoría interesante sobre su origen es la siguiente:

«Coger botella» puede estar relacionada con el significado de botella, que en lenguaje popular significaba recibir un salario por un puesto que no se ocupaba realmente. Eran concesiones de políticos corruptos. Por tanto, supongo que «coger botella» era como ganarse la transportación sin pagar.

Coger botella es una forma de movilizarse en Cuba.

Vivir en cualquier ciudad implica tener la posibilidad de transportarse a diario para ir al trabajo, a la escuela, al médico o a divertirse. Si la ciudad es de cierto tamaño no siempre es posible hacerlo caminando o con bicicleta. Así que tarde o temprano, todos necesitan el transporte público.

En los años 90, cuando desapareció la Unión Soviética, la economía de la isla entró en el llamado «período especial» que, entre otras cosas, limitó las unidades automotoras, el mantenimiento y la frecuencia de las rutas del transporte público.

Cómo resultado de esta situación se popularizó en Cuba la práctica de pedir botella. Es una actividad que habla de un transporte público insuficiente. Sin embargo, también dice mucho de la seguridad y la solidaridad entre los cubanos, sin las cuales esta práctica no sería posible.

Si bien es cierto que existen los «botilleros obstinados» (los que asumen que los conductores tienen la obligación de llevarlos) y los «choferes caritiesos» (los que actúan sin ninguna solidaridad), es importante observar que esta práctica tan extendida solo es posible por el carácter abierto y fraternal de la mayoría de los habitantes de la isla.
